It is with sorrow in our hearts that we announce the passing of Reed Elden Gunderson, on January 29th 2025, one day after his 91st birthday. Reed was born in Murray, Utah January 28th, 1934 to Elden William Gunderson and Millie Hildora Peterson. He was the second of four children. His father worked in the brick yard in Murray and being concerned for his health he bought a farm and moved his family to the small community of Salem. Reed grew up milking cows and whatever else was needed on the farm.
Reed attended school in Spanish Fork, graduating from Spanish Fork High School in 1952. He attended Utah State University for 1 year before transferring to BYU and graduating in 1960 with a degree in accounting.
Reed as a young man served a mission in the Western States Mission serving mostly in Colorado and New Mexico.
After graduating from BYU Reed came to Salt Lake City to work for Sperry Company. After a couple of years at Sperry Reed changed jobs to work for the Utah State Retirement System, where he worked for over 33 years before retiring.
Reed met his wife, Jacklyn Soderborg, on a blind date. That was in August of 1960, and they were married on September 22, 1961 by Spencer W. Kimball in the Salt Lake Temple. They bought a home in the South Cottonwood area where they raised their family.
Together they enjoyed traveling, attending the Temple, watching a good football game, cheering for BYU and spending time at their cabin. Reed liked fishing and relaxing in the mountains.
Reed was an active member of the LDS Church servicing faithfully in many positions including counselor in four ward bishoprics. Together Reed and Jackie served two full time missions in the Georgia Atlanta Mission and the Oakland California Mission, Oakland Temple Visitors Center.
Reed is survived by his wife Jackie, son Kevin (Stephanie) and daughter Kalyn; five grandchildren Autumn, Madalyn, Austin, Ashley, Aidan; six Great Grandchildren; his brother Merrill and his sister Sharon (Ron) Braithwaite. Reed’s son Kelly and sister Marjean preceded him in death.
