Read Archibald

July 19, 1940 — August 19, 2015

Read Wallace Archibald passed away peacefully at his home in Salt Lake City, Utah, Wednesday, August 19, 2015 after enduring a courageous battle with Lewy Body Dementia. http://www.alz.org/dementia/dementia-with-lewy-bodies-symptoms.asp
At the time of his passing he was surrounded by his family and is survived by his devoted wife of 51 years, Caroll, his children Kelly (Mark) Fankhauser, Justin (Valerie) Archibald, Tyler (Ashley) Archibald, and his five grandchildren all of Salt Lake City, as well as his sisters Donna (Roy) Buettner and Gayla (David) Sleight, and extended family and friends.
Read was born an eager “farm kid” in Cardston, Alberta, July 19, 1940. Raised in Glenwood, Alberta, he treasured his parents Wallace and Kay, loved his youth spent in Southern Alberta, and cherished sharing both the farm and the forest with his children and close friends. He grew to devote his life to his two passions, his work and his family. Read graduated from Utah State University in 1963 and began his 35 year career in the oil and gas industry with Hudson’s Bay Oil and Gas in Edmonton, Alberta. He went on to pursue challenges at Pacific Petroleum, Mobil Oil and finally retiring with Occidental Petroleum Corporation as Senior Vice President of Administration in 1997. From the shores of Tripoli to the deepest jungles in South America, Read lived and travelled the globe as the company’s man, influencing many lives with his keen intellect and his drive for innovation. A true gentleman, associates and friends respected and admired Read as the guy with the highest of moral integrity, who was always motivated by a sense of right, and purpose –both in business and in life. He truly loved to engage in intelligent conversations, skillfully matching his wit with his friends and arguing economics, politics and life’s unanswered questions.
Following retirement, Read focused on his other passion, his family. He and Caroll travelled the world extensively, but made kids and grandkids their priority. Generous to a fault, they shared their love for the Northwest, Alpine Skiing, and the beach, at their homes in Anacortes, Washington, Park City and Holladay, Utah -with fun and lively visits from friends and family. Read was the consummate host, always quick to offer his guests a cocktail, a warm handshake, and a taste of his quick wit.
His charm, dry sense of humor, and endless energy, will be greatly missed.
Friends and family are invited to join in a celebration of his life on September 14, 2015 11:00am at the LDS Chapel, 2625 East Milo Way, Holladay, Utah. Condolences, personal stories, and messages can be viewed and shared at www.holladaycottonwoodmortuary.com
