Raymond Lee Putman

February 26, 1924 — September 27, 2018

Raymond Lee Putman passed away September 27, 2018 at the age of 94. We will miss his stories, sense of humor, service to others, and love. He was born to Henry Lee Putman and Bessie Noakes Putman on February 26, 1924. He was raised in Carbon County towns of Soldier Summit, Spring Glen, and finally Helper, Utah with his sister Marjorie and brother David. He had a good loving family.
He graduated from Price High School and later The College of Eastern Utah. He enlisted in the Army during World War II before he was drafted. He had just turned 19. He served in India in the 173rd Ordance Company. He served for 3 years until the war ended, circling the world on his return ship. He was a true patriot and felt so fortunate that he returned home safely. Many of his best friends did not return and that left a permanent feeling of loss.
After returning he met Ellen Mae Ramsay on the dance floor. They fell in love and were married November 23, 1946. They continued to dance throughout their entire marriage. They were beautiful Ballroom Dancers. People used the word mesmerizing. They were inseparable and showed unconditional love, setting an example for us all. They raised four children and were always there for them and later their grandchildren and great grandchildren whom he loved so much and was very proud of. Ellen passed away 2 months short of their 65th Anniversary.
He worked for the Rio Grande Railroad in Helper and then Salt Lake. For awhile he worked for both the Rio Grande and Union Pacific. He continued to work for the Union Pacific in Salt Lake for 40 years until his retirement.
He was a hard worker his entire life either being a carpenter, electrician, bricklayer or plumber. He was always helping others when they needed help. He was raised learning honesty, fairness, and service to others. He was a peacemaker and people loved him. Besides raising their 4 children they became foster parents for over 28 years helping 83 different boys in their home. He was a member of the LDS church. He was a Fraternal Order of Eagles member where he and Ellen had many friends.
He was full of knowledge, a true Renaissance Man; loving books and history. He had a remarkable memory. His sense of humor and wit was well known with many a story to tell. He knew joy and pain, love and loss, life and death. Through it all he was grateful and appreciative of his life.
