Ray Montgomery

Ray Leishman Montgomery, 87, passed away February 15, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. Ray fell while serving as a missionary for the LDS Church, and died from complications. Born May 7, 1929, in Wellsville, Utah, to Robert Hugh and Maude Leishman Montgomery. He served an LDS mission to Lubbock, Texas, and served his country in the Korean War in the Counter Intelligence Corps. Ray married his sweetheart, Shirley Joy Craig, in the Logan Temple on July 1, 1954.
He was a devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, fulfilling many church callings throughout his lifetime. His most cherished service was in being a Bishop and a temple ordinance worker. Ray graduated from the University of Utah with a Juris Doctorate degree. He then served for many years as an Assistant City Attorney for Salt Lake City, as well as being generous with his time to help friends and family with legal issues.
He loved spending time at the cabin, eating, and most of all being with his family.
Ray is survived by his wife, Shirley; eight children: Stephen (Sheri Sanderson), Mary Archbold (Scott), Dan, Ruth Backman (Bret), Rachel Sandberg (Brian), Joy Lloyd (Brent), Jon (Elisa Peterson) and Amy Farnsworth (Rick); 31 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and his brother Paul (Lynda). He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Larry, and two great-grandchildren, Samuel Backman and Lincoln Smith.
A viewing will be held Sunday, Feb. 19, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Butler 18th Ward building, 6634 S. Greenfield Way in Cottonwood Heights.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Feb. 20, at 11a.m. at the Butler 18th Ward. Friends may visit with the family from 9:30 to 10:30 prior to the services. Interment will take place at Memorial Mountain View Cemetery, 3115 E., 7800 South, Cottonwood Heights, Utah. In lieu of flowers, please take someone you love out for lunch or dinner.
