Raleigh Truman Bunch Sr. who passed away at age 88 in Sandy, Utah on May 27, 2017. He was born on February 13, 1929 in Long Beach, California to Raymond and Gwendolyn Bunch.
Raleigh attended and graduated from Franklin D. Roosevelt High School in Compton, California in 1946 and enlisted in the Air Force in 1947. After serving 3 years in the Koran War he returned home from Guam and married LaVon Otero and they had 3 sons: Raleigh, Marlon and Dana. He then began his career at Northrup as an aircraft mechanic and aviation specialist. He worked at Northrup for 42 years where he met and married his 2nd wife, Myrna Ramona Fecko. They were happily married for 51 years.
Raleigh especially loved spending time with his family, he was always generous and thoughtful. He loved to entertain and loved a good party. Throughout his lifetime he loved to take risks and enjoyed gambling, playing bingo and the lotto. He was a risk taker and in the early 90’s he won an opportunity to go on the “Big Spin” where he won $30,000. He loved all games of chance. He loved speed, cars and Nascar. He also enjoyed spending time at Hollywood Park watching the horses run.
Raleigh was a hero not only to his family but also in the community where he lived while working for Northrup. On July 25, 1989 he received a Certificate of Recognition from the City of Gardena for his heroic action on July 11, 1989, when without regard for his own safety, he pulled an unconscious driver out of a burning car which had crashed into a telephone pole, thus saving her life.
After retirement, he and his wife Myrna moved to Meridian, Idaho were they lived happily together for over 20 years. Raleigh’s hobbies included being an avid gardener and tinkering around the house and on various home improvement projects. He was an avid collector of Department 56 and had over 500 homes and over 20 different villages. He had an entire room dedicated to Christmas, which he celebrated year round. During the holidays, he was on the local news for his Christmas display in the room he custom designed and built to house his holiday displays and trains. During the holidays, tour buses would come and enjoy his amazing winter wonderland and holiday creation. Seeing children and his family enjoy the room and his creations always brought a smile to his face. He had a great eye for detail, was a perfectionist and left his special and creative touch on everything.
Raleigh is survived by his 3 sons and daughter-in-laws – Raleigh Bunch (Renee), Marlon Bunch, and Dana Bunch (Debbie) and his siblings – Hila (Bob) Sweet, Edna Bates, and Kathleen Allen. He is survived by 8 grandchildren – Eva, Melissa, Emily, Brandon, Lindsey, Patrick, Heidi and Nathan. And his great grandchildren – Truman, Olivia, Zachary, Ocean, Hunter, Araya, and Andrew.
He is proceeded in death by his wife of 51 years – Myrna Ramona Bunch and his 3 brothers Larry, Sammy and Ray.
We will forever miss our loving father and grandfather and will keep his beautiful and infectious smile and spirit in our memories.
