Surrounded by her children and grandchildren, Popua Nau Tuifangaloka Halaufia, reunited with
her husband when she passed away peacefully on January 22, 2022 in her home in Salt Lake
City, Utah. Popua was born on March 29, 1953 in Houma, Tongatapu Tonga. Born to Sione and
Kalolaine Teukialupe Tuifangaloka, she was the ninth child out of ten. She married Sosaia
Halaufia on April 14, 1984 in the Salt Lake Temple.
Popua grew up in Tonga and came to Utah right before she was married in 1983. She had a few
jobs. She worked at the Post Office, as well as being a care giver at a couple of nursing homes.
She gave 25 years to Christus St. Joseph Villa where she retired at the age of 65.
Popua knew her way around a kitchen. Especially when it came to baking. It brought her joy to
see family and friends enjoy eating her cooking and baked goods. She always had food at her
house. Popua was also an avid seamstress sewing her own clothes.
Popua was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She served a
mission in Vava’u for 18 months. Her latest, and probably favorite calling, was teaching the
Tongan Sunday School class in her ward. She brought treats for the class and enjoyed the
discussions that she lead. She was faithful, god fearing, and loved the Lord and Gospel with all
her heart.
Popua is survived by her daughters Luseane, Asinate Taumoepeau (Michael), Akesa; sons
Fatu’imoana (Katie), and Kefusikahahake; grandson Feleti Taumoepeau; granddaughters
Naulani Taumoepeau, Uinse Taumoepeau, and Leilani Evaleti Taumoepeau; siblings Veisinia
Ueleni (Viliami), Tepola Lolohea Tuifangaloka, Melepine Mausia (Sitaleki), and Salote Lata
Puloka (Tony), as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her
husband, Sosaia Halaufia, both her parents, and other loved ones.
