Philip Stevens

February 18, 1940 — November 14, 2013

Phil Stevens passed away peacefully on November 14th, 2013 surrounded by his loving family at home.
He was a gentle, kind and loving man who taught all of us many valuable life lessons.
Philip Mills Stevens was born in 1940 in Riverside, New Jersey. He attended Moorestown Friends School in New Jersey. As a young man he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Dad also participated in soccer and track & field throughout his high school and college years. He attended Lehigh University and graduated in chemical engineering. Dad worked at Hercules/ATK and worked there for 35 years.
He was married to the love of his life Patricia Zilius in 1962 for 43 years.
Dad was transferred several times during his career. The family had countless adventures in every place they lived and settled in Utah in 1980.
Dad’s favorite passion and hobby was rock hounding. He loved camping; we always sang campfire songs on every trip we went on with Dad playing his beloved guitar. Dad and Mom were avid golfers. As a rocket scientist, Dad loved everything to do with space exploration and NASA.
He loved teaching and studying Geology. He was a docent for the Utah Museum of Natural History and taught Junior Science for well over 20 years. He was an active member of several mineral clubs for many years.
Phil is survived by his daughters Cheryl Rudy, (grandchildren Julia and Christian); Jennifer Stevens-Smith (husband Louis and grandchildren Carlos and Gabriel); son Mark Stevens (grandchildren Holly and Megan).
He will be buried at a private family gathering. We would like to welcome all to an informal celebration of his life on Fri. Nov. 22, 2013 6-8p at Holladay United Church of Christ, 2631 E Murray Holladay Road (4590 S) in Holladay, Utah 84117. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.holladaycottonwoodmortuary.com
In lieu of flowers donations would be graciously welcomed in his name to the Utah Museum of Natural History.
