Paul M. Savage

September 17, 1927 — October 16, 2019

Beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great grandfather, Paul Mathers Savage returned to his Heavenly Father on Wednesday, October 16, 2019 after a courageous battle with Pre-Leukemia. He is survived by his resilient, angel wife, VaLoy Packer Savage; daughter Connie Johnson (John), daughter Anne Savage (Ron), son Jerry Savage (Sharla), son Brent Savage (Gloria), daughter Linda Vincent (Keith) and Son-in-law Len Allen, 28 Grandchildren, 90 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren. Sister, Bonnie Duke. Preceded in death by daughter LaRee Allen.
Paul Mathers Savage was born September 17, 1927 to Parley Savage and Leona Hurst in Logan, Utah. Paul was the sixth of seven children and spent many of his childhood years milking cows in the early morning hours on the family dairy farm. The Savage family would spend many evenings listening to their favorite radio programs, and oftentimes Paul’s mother would have to carry him up to bed after the show ended, as Paul has always loved catching some extra Z’s.
Paul loved riding his trusty horses and practicing his target shooting. The practice paid off as he was an expert marksman when he joined the army and served his country faithfully from Japan during World War II.
Just a week or so after returning home from the army, Paul wanted to go to the weekly Saturday night dance. He asked his sister Bonnie who would be the finest gal he could take. She said the lovely VaLoy Packer would be his best choice! They two-stepped the night away! VaLoy went straight home to tell her mother she had met the man she was going to marry.
Paul and VaLoy were married August 11, 1948 in the Logan, Utah Temple. They were blessed with six beautiful children, and their family has grown to nearly 200 members.
Countless memories were made at the little white house in Rose Park, Utah. The best corn, raspberries, melons, and green beans were grown by Grandpa Savage. His yard and garden were in tip-top shape and you could always count on a delicious treat. When he wasn’t gardening, Paul was often camping in his trailer, backpacking in the Uintas, talking on the CB radio as “Papa Eddy”, making tire swings for the children and playing his harmonica, and singing wherever he went. In his later years, he enjoyed being in a choir and a kazoo band.
Paul was a very meticulous person from organizing his garage to his food storage to a spotless car! He worked for Mountain Fuel for many years as a meter repairman. He was blessed with a keen mind throughout his entire life being able to remember people and places and could tell you story after story about his life.
Paul was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many different capacities over the years, including: being in a bishopric and then as a bishop for several years, in the High Priest Group Leadership, and in Sunday School presidencies. He served with his sweetheart, VaLoy, in the Australia Brisbane Mission, which included experiences in Papua New Guinea, and later as workers in the Salt Lake Temple.
Paul and VaLoy set a wonderful legacy of love in motion that night at the dance hall. Each of us was taught to love God, be kind to one another, and always be ready for a party.
As a loving father, grandfather and even great-great grandfather, Paul has touched each of our lives and changed us for the better. He will be remembered fondly..
