Patricia Ruth Herfurth Ward passed away in Murray, Utah, on Sunday, October 24, 2021, of causes related to heart and kidney failure.
Pat was born March 24, 1939, to John Herfurth and Alice Gillen in Cincinnati, Ohio. She moved extensively as a child before settling with her grandmother, Sally, in Ogden, Utah. She married John Newell Ward II on August 1, 1958, in Roy, Utah. They were married for 51 years before “Jack” passed away on October 8, 2009. They were the parents of one son. Their home in Murray was also the gathering place for many “adopted” sons and daughters beginning in their teens and continuing to the current day.
Pat enjoyed a varied career, including working as an advertising copywriter for The Paris department store, as a freelance journalist for the Murray Eagle community newspaper, and as a regional manager for The Gamekeeper chain of game stores. She was active in community service for many years, including serving as an officer in the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, as a Cub Scout den leader, as a Murray High School football team Mom, and in a variety of Parent Teacher Association roles.
Pat is survived by her son, John N. Ward III (Mindy) of South Jordan; five grandchildren (Melissa, John, Jesse, Adam, Olivia) and eight great grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Candace Witherspoon, of Scottsdale, Arizona.
Thanks to all of the sons, daughters, and good friends who helped Pat through her illness. She was truly loved by everyone who knew her well.
According to Pat’s request, no service will be held. A celebration of her life will be scheduled next March around the time of her birthday. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to the charity of your choice.
