March 30, 1935 — January 14, 2017

Ovannes (Hovik) Sangibaran Baghoomian
Our beloved husband, father and grandfather passed away on January 14, 2017 after a yearlong battle following a stroke. He was called to heaven on his name day, honoring Saint John the Baptist.
Hovik was born in Sangibaran (Iran) in March 30, 1935. His parents Askhen and Karapet Baghoomian, and his youngest brother Moses precede him in death. His brothers Harutyun and Apel, and sisters Anoosh and Iskanooi survive him.
Hovik’s dream of a higher education brought him to the Beehive State in 1958 where he attended Brigham Young University and later University of Utah where he completed his Doctorate of Philosophy in Geological Engineering.
Hovik was a gentle soul with a great sense of humor.  He was always proud of his Armenian heritage and roots. Striving to honor his heritage in his new home, he became one of the early promoters of the Armenian Association of Utah.
He was a humble man regardless of his many successes and accomplishments. He started a Civil Engineering firm in Iran, which he had to abandon during the revolution in 1979. After living in Utah for several years, he started Delta Geotechnical Consultants, Inc., an environmental and geotechnical engineering firm, and Earthcore, Inc., a drilling company, which were the pillars of his professional career until 2012 when he “retired” and began his “post-retirement” career in consulting and property management.
Hovik touched so many people’s lives through his generosity. He helped many family members and friends in their endeavor to become citizens of the United States, as well as those that were employed by him in developing their professional pursuits. Hovik’s family has been the grateful beneficiary of these personal accounts and stories, particularly in this last year as Hovik strived to recover from his stroke.
His true joy in life was his wife and family. He adored his children and grandchildren, and was immensely loved by his extended family.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years (Helion), son Michael (Trina), daughter Ida (Morgan), and his grandchildren Sienna, Maximilian, Zara, Deveraux, and Miesha.
Hovik’s zest for life will always be remembered. Whether it was skiing, golfing, dancing, or playing poker, he enjoyed his passions and lived each day to the fullest.  Although his void will be impossible to fill, we hope to carry on his legacy in every possible way.
