Orvid Fredrick Schafer

July 27, 1938 — August 5, 2020

Orvid Fredrick Schafer was born to Oscar and Hazel on July 27, 1938 in Nyssa, Oregon. He
lived on the family farm there as an only child. Fred attended Adrian schools and graduated
from Adrian High School in 1956.
He joined the United States Navy and served for 22 years as an Aviation Electronic Technician.
Some of his military highlights include three tours on aircraft carriers off Vietnam and
participation in the Iran Blockade from 1978-1980. He also served four years as an aircraft
electronic maintenance instructor and was involved with career development and safety
programs.
Fred married Mary Elizabeth Holcombe on November 17, 1961 in Seattle, Washington. They
moved to San Diego as part of his Navy assignment and raised three boys, Steven Drew,
Robert Lawerence, and Aaron James.
Fred and Mary were sealed for time and all eternity in the Los Angeles temple in June of 1967.
After his retirement from the Navy, he and Mary moved to Midvale, Utah where he continued his
work in the electronic field.
Fred loved rock collecting and polishing, and was a member of the Utah Gem Society. He loved
to spend time outside whether in the garden or camping and fishing.
Fred found joy in serving others and would often be found helping neighbors, friends, and
family.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Elizabeth, his son Steven (Mary), his son Robert (Michelle), his
son Aaron (Kim), and twelve grandchildren.
