Norman Cortsen passed away August 7, 2017, being reunited with his wife and eternal companion Betty and many other loved ones gone before, including a son and daughter.
Norm lived a long and productive life with a strong mind, healthy body and quick humor. He enjoyed meeting people. He had great love for his family. Everything he did in life; be it construction projects on his home and cabin, road trips, growing things in his garden, it was all for the love and betterment of his family.
Norm was born December 8, 1923 in Kanosh, Utah to Andrew and Adelia Cortsen. He was the sixth of seven children; siblings Loyal, Wilson, Twila, Lilian, Marie, and LaRita. His brother Wilson died as a teen from a traumatic accident when Norm was six years old. At age 12 he lost his father. Depression years were hard, his elder siblings went out of state to find work. With a younger sister for his widowed mother still to raise Norm went to Minnesota to help his sister, Twila (Don) Johnson on their farm. He learned many skills there that he used throughout his life. Due to the farm work his military service was deferred, he later enlisted in the Army and served in Korea.
He referred to himself always as Old Norm, though he seemed to resist aging. He married Betty Johnson November 21, 1948. Together they had 8 children. Martin, Linda (who died at birth), Dan (Leslie), Becky (Ted) Wood, Katrina (Dennis) Webber, James (deceased), Harriet (Con) Natter and Margaret.
He worked thirty years as a mail carrier in Holladay. He always had a great, social personality and endearing humor; people took to him right away and remembered him for years to come.
As a Korean war veteran he was preparing to go on the “Honor Flight” program to be honored with other veterans in Washington D.C., but his health began to fail. He recovered enough to spend another year with us, demonstrating his exceptional love of family and life with his usual upbeat demeanor and positive outlook. He was sharp and alert to the very end of a very good life. He was the last of his siblings to pass.Service Information
