Norman Joseph Tabish, “Tab”, beloved father, grandpa, great grandpa, uncle and best friend passed away peacefully at his home January 1, 2018. Dad was born March 21, 1929 in Butte, Montana to Anthony and Ann Tabish. He married Barbara Jean Charles on February 11, 1950 in Salt Lake City, Utah. They were happily married for 56 years until Barbara passed December, 2006. He was a Sergeant Chef (cook) in the Korean War and extremely proud to have served his country. He was self-employed as a used car dealer for 35 years, until his retirement. Norm was trustworthy, and at times would finance his customers, making sure they got the best car they could afford. Norm enjoyed camping, fishing with family and friends, trips to Wendover, driving dune buggies with family and son Rob in Moab. Norm and Barb escaped every winter to Yuma, Arizona where they had many fun adventures. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 67 for 43 years. Norm and Barbara had a passion for ballroom dancing, and to watch them dance was like watching “Dancing with the Stars”. If not dancing together at the Eagles, you would find them devoting countless hours raising money for various charities at the Eagles; it could be an Easter Brunch, morning breakfast, dinner dance or the famous Monte Carlo night. They would organize, recruit or be seen in the kitchen cooking or washing dishes to assist in any way possible. In his later years, you could find Norm on Thursday nights at the Heritage Senior Center dancing up a storm with his many dearest friends.
One of Norm’s proudest accomplishments was the time he spent as a member of the Eagles Aerie 67. He served on the board of trustees for 5 years, working through all officers’ chairs: Conductor, Chaplain, Vice-President, and that of Worthy President. He had the honor of being the Grand Aerie Director, Four Corners Region for the Jimmy Durante Fund for three years. Norm obtained three grants from the Grand Aerie for the local Granite School District for special needs students, and in the process obtained a grant for $10,000 to the Hartvigsen Foundation at the National Convention in Salt Lake City. Norm was the Chairman of Charity Week for 8 years. After Barb passed, he again obtained a grant from the Jimmy Durante Fund to buy two touch screen computers for the special needs students at John C. Fremont to assist them in communicating.
Norm served on the Board of Directors of the Catholic Credit Union for many years and received an “Award of Appreciation” for his outstanding service. The Salt Lake Police Department Mobile Neighborhood Watch Program awarded him two certificates of appreciation for his dedication of more than 13 years. His various awards for his outstanding services in the community and dedication to the doctrine of helping others less fortunate are a testimony to his beliefs. He was a true gentleman, with strict morals, high ideals, true integrity and always mentoring those along the way. His memory will live on forever in the hearts of his loved ones and those whose lives he touched.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Francis and Gene, his wife Barbara, and his son Robert.
He is survived by his children Karen Tabish, Janet Raineri, Kenneth Tabish, and daughter-in-law Ginny (Robert, dec.) Tabish; his grandchildren Nicole (Brandon) O’Neal, Eliza (Iliasia) Lotaki, Travis Anderson, Michael Raineri, Andy Raineri, and Tyler Tabish; his great grandchildren Dakari, Kalani, Salesi, Elijah, and Gary.
