Norman August Hanneman

May 25, 1924 — July 30, 2018

Norman August Hanneman age 94 died on 7/30/2018. He was born 5/25/1924 at home on the family farm in Marathon County, Wisconsin. He was the fourth child of Fredrick Julius Hanneman and Helen Horenke Hanneman.
He attended Stratford High School his freshman and sophomore years. He attended Edgar High School his junior and senior years and graduated from that school in 1942.He was drafted into the United States Army (Signal Corp – Communication, Infantry).
Norman was stationed in the European Theater. He spoke fluent German and spent time interpreting for General Hammond. His language skills and skills fixing gas stoves landed him in the kitchen. He would go on to attend cooks and bakers’ school in Heidelberg Germany.
He returned home in 1947 and married Carole Olm. Three children, Phillip, Gary and Geri-Lyn blessed that marriage. That marriage ended in 1976. Norman worked for Roddis Lumber and Veneer, which later became Weyerhauser, for twenty-seven years combined. He progressed from kiln drying limber, foreman of the paint shop, to a position in the Engineering dept.
Norman moved to Salt Lake City where he purchased and managed Big Al’s Restaurant on social Hall Avenue. There he developed and marketed the first six food sandwich (Canyon Combo) available in Salt Lake City. He sold Big Al’s in 1981.
He worked as a cook on oil rigs in Utah and Wyoming for two years. He then went on to work in food service at the Granite School District kitchen until his retirement at age sixty-five in 1989.
Norm and Betty Keil married on July 12, 1989 and had many happy years together. They traveled to Jamaica, Panama, Alaska, Mexico, Canada and many destinations in the United States. Norm and Betty spent numerous winters in Arizona with friends in their motor home. They enjoyed the great outdoors, camping and fishing from their boat. He especially enjoyed deer hunting – He never missed a year. He was the consummate sportsman. He always enjoyed cooking for friends and family and especially consuming good food. He planted and attended his garden during the summer. He designed and built many unique and creative projects around home. In later years, he was a regular at the Taylorsville Senior Center where he and Betty participate in numerous activities and made many friends.
Norm is survived by his wife, children: Gary Hanneman, Geri-Lyn Hanneman, William Barrett, Steve (Clay) Barrett, Cindy (Todd) Thompson, 15 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.
He was a loving father, husband, family man and friend. He will be remembered, loved and missed by all who knew him.
A memorial service will he held on Monday, August 6, 2018 at Memorial Redwood Mortuary and Cemetery 6500 South Redwood Road, West Jordan, Utah 84123 at 7:00 PM, with friends and family gathering starting at 6:00 PM.
