Norma Mangum

May 18, 1928 — August 25, 2019

1928 ~ 2019

Norma Mae (Olsen) Mangum, our beloved wife, mother, grandmother & great-grandmother passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 25, 2019 at the age of 91.

She was born in Monroe, Utah on May 18, 1928 to Nephi Bernhardt Olsen and Emma Caroline (Anderton) Olsen. She was the 5th of six children.

She married Jerry D. Mangum on May 1, 1947 in Las Vegas, NV and remained together until Jerry’s passing on July 30, 2008. Together they raised five children.

Norma was raised during the Great Depression years and spent her early years in Monroe and Richfield, UT. Her family nearly lost everything during the depression, but was able to move to Provo, UT in 1941 to find new opportunity. She graduated from Provo High School in 1946.

She met Jerry, the love of her life, at a dance in Provo for servicemen returning from World War II duty. After they were married, they spent time at various houses and apartments in Lehi, Pleasant Grove, Orem and Provo before moving to Sahara Village in Layton, UT with their three young daughters where they both worked at Hill Air Force Base. In 1953, they relocated to Albuquerque, NM where Jerry started a new career as a truck driver. They spent seven happy years in Albuquerque where Norma was able to stay at home with the children and also welcomed their first son into the world. In the summer of 1960, Jerry applied for a transfer to Salt Lake City, which he received later that year. The family relocated back to Utah and bought a house in the Rose Park neighborhood of Salt Lake City, where Norma and Jerry both resided for the remainder of their lives.

After moving to Salt Lake, Norma started a new career at Litton Guidance and Control in 1963, building circuit boards for the guidance systems that went into Air Force and Navy airplanes. She eventually advanced to assembling whole systems. She left Litton in 1969 to care for her second son while he was young, but was able to return to work in 1975. She retired from Litton in 1987.

Norma lived for her family. She was always involved in her children’s activities. Helping out at their schools, chaperoning their field trips, helping out on their sports teams, taking them to music lessons, running them around to friends’ houses and parties, etc. And it didn’t end with her children. She was willing to do the same for her grandchildren and great grandchildren as well. She just loved any excuse to be around her family.

Norma was also involved in the local community. She was a member of the LDS Church and was an original member of the Albuquerque Morman Choir with Jerry, where they participated in the first concert in the new Albuquerque Civic Auditorium. She served as Women’s Auxiliary Treasurer for Ute Conference Little League Football. She served as treasurer of the Western Teamsters Retiree Club, participating in senior sessions with the Utah Legislature. She also loved participating in charity events sponsored by the Rose Park Lions Club, of which Jerry was a member.

Norma also loved traveling. The family would go on some sort of a vacation every year. Sometimes just camping trips around Utah. Sometimes trips to California, New Mexico or Kansas to visit one of Jerry’s sisters. Sometimes to Washington to visit Norma’s sister. Norma loved exploring new places and learning about the history. She was a strong proponent for seeing history in person rather than reading about it in books. After retirement, Norma and Jerry bought a small RV and joined the Good Sam RV Club where they were able to travel all around the country to attend various club gatherings. Norma and Jerry celebrated their Golden Anniversary in 1997 with a memorable two-week tour to the Southern states where they were able to see such places as New Orleans, Orlando and Savannah, GA.

Norma is survived by her daughters Christine Kasai, Emma Kathleen (Josef) Kroner; sons Dan Mangum, Corey (Stacey) Mangum; grandchildren Becky (Aaron) East, Dustin (Blythe) Kasai, Jamie (Ryan) Bandley, Lisa (Nate) Crandall, Adam (Jana) Carlton, Brian Carlton, Codi Kasai, Kasey Lambert, Jayce Mangum, Madison Mangum, Kyrah Mangum, Zachary Mangum; and eighteen great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jerry and daughter Connie (Bruce) Carlton.
