Nellena Smith Carlsen

Nellena Cho (Alcho) Potts Smith Carlsen, age 89, quietly passed away on June 7, 2022 at 8:35 p.m surrounded by family in her home in Avondale, Arizona. She was born on February 13, 1933 in Fort Worth, Texas to Homer Guy Potts and Sarah Sophia Fritz. She is preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Douglas Durland Potts and Marvin Herf Potes, her husbands Robert Maurice Smith and Calvin Ray Carlsen along with several grand and great-grandchildren. She is survived by her sister Gloria Gwendolyn Warnes of West Jordan, Utah; her children Letrilla Cho (Chodi) King of Freeport, Florida; Robert Maurice & Mary Ann Smith of St. George, Utah; Douglas Lamont & Peggy Ann Smith of Las Vegas, Nevada; Saralee Gwendolyn & Clifford Leon (Sonny) Kemple, Jr. of Huntington, Utah; Shane Allen & Virginia Lou Smith of Las Vegas, Nevada; Tammy Lynelle and Calvin Richard Crane of Kanarraville, Utah; Nellena Ann & Dana Alan Hoffman of Merritt Island, Florida; and Sheldon Lance & Charlene Nicole Smith of Avondale, Arizona. Nellena leaves a large posterity of 56 grandchildren, 119 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren.
Nellena was a beautiful woman inside and out, a talented artist in painting and ceramics and a square dance instructor. She was widowed at 36 years and raised 8 children as a single mother. She had a gift of lifting and loving others. She was a woman of great faith and a life long member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was a kind and graceful lady with a quiet air. She had a zest for life and a fierce will to live. She loved to read and always kept abreast of current events. She was an avid collector of beautiful things, but above all, her most precious possessions and greatest joy were her loving family.
There will be a viewing at 11:00 am on June 18th at the chapel located at 8825 South 1095 West, West Jordan, Utah. Thereafter she will be laid to rest at Memorial Redwood Mortuary and Cemetery in West Jordan, Utah on June 18, 2022 next to her eternal companion Robert Maurice Smith.
Our Yellow Rose of Texas will always be with us.
