Naomi Marie Sattelberg

January 10, 1931 — May 6, 2016

Naomi Marie (nee Belk) passed away on May 6, 2016 under the loving care of the staff of Sunrise at Holladay and Inspiration Hospice after suffering a second stroke. She had the kindest, loving and generous soul that touched the lives of many and will be greatly missed.
Naomi was born on January 10, 1931, in Cincinnati, Ohio, the middle daughter of Rev. William Belk and Irma (Hieronymus) Belk. Her early years were spent in Toledo, Ohio.  Following Rev. Belk’s service as a Navy Chaplain in WWII, the family settled in Alpena, Michigan. Naomi was Salutatorian of Alpena High School’s Class of 1948 and graduated from Capital University in Bexley, Ohio in 1952.. After teaching kindergarten and first grade in South Euclid and Lyndhurst, Naomi moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan where she taught first and second grades while earning her Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Michigan (1958). Naomi married Stanley Sattelberg on April 30, 1960, in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  She accompanied Stan, a civil/structural engineer with Chicago Bridge and Iron, to jobsites in Saugus, California, and El Dorado, Arkansas. Stan was then transferred to the Chicago area where she did some substitute teaching in Home Town and Oak Lawn until her daughter, Christel was born in 1961. In 1964, Stan went to Algeria on another field assignment and Naomi and Christel joined him for six months, also touring parts of Europe. After a brief stay in Baker, Louisiana, the family settled in Naperville, Illinois in 1965. Naomi was a dedicated kindergarten and first grade teacher at Beebe Elementary School in Naperville. It was her custom to visit each of her incoming students at their home before the school year began. In 1985, Naomi was selected by the Illinois State Kindergarten Conference Committee for Recognizing Excellence in Kindergarten Teaching as an outstanding kindergarten teacher. In addition to spending her time in preparation and planning for teaching, Naomi spent many hours chauffeuring and attending weekly swim meets to support her daughter’s swimming career and volunteered as a ski patroller. Naomi retired in 1987 and moved to Salt Lake City, Utah in 1988 to be closer to her daughter and grandchildren.
Naomi was a breast cancer survivor (1997) and found her new calling in life. She was an advocate for breast cancer awareness, BSE and mammography. She was very involved in various support groups, Reach to Recovery, Race for the Cure, Rally for a Cure, and Speaker’s Bureau for Cancer. In 1999, Naomi was employed as a certified fitter at Carol’s Post-Mastectomy Boutique helping to meet the need of other breast cancer survivors. She retired again in 2015.
Naomi was also an active member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, teaching Sunday school for 20+ years and singing in the choir. She was an avid skier and enjoyed hiking and going to Bear Lake.  She loved playing golf with 2 ladies golf leagues and even got a hole-in-one 4 ½ weeks after her breast cancer diagnosis. She was a huge fan of Utah Gymnastics and had season tickets for many years, even traveling to a number of away meets. Naomi loved being with the entire family on vacations. These extended family get-togethers held wonderful family memories for her.
Preceded in death by her husband Stan (2013), Naomi left this world to join her Savior on May 6, 2016. She is survived by her sister, Lois Welsch of Cleveland, Ohio, and brother Robert Belk of Bethesda, Maryland; daughter Christel (Michael) Parker of Salt Lake City; and grandchildren Caitlin Parker and Steven Parker, also of Salt Lake City.
