Monte Raymond Bye

October 18, 1945 — April 18, 2022

Monte Raymond Bye passed away on Monday April 18th, 2022 due to an illness after many years of living with the effects of a motorcycle accident 42 years ago. He was 76 years old. Monte was born on October 18, 1945 in St. Paul Minnesota to Raymond Sigurd and Mary Clarissa Edwards. He was named after his father and was the firstborn child in his family. `
Monte enjoyed life and had a number of talents. enjoyed the outdoors. He loved camping, hunting, spending time with family and Diet Coke! He had a talent for music and playing the piano. He loved to just sit down and play to entertain people for fun. He has always had a fascination with fast cars and engines; he could look at an engine and just knew how it worked. He was innately born with a mechanic’s brain and he passed this gift down to several of his children and grandchildren.
Monte attended Rick’s College for a few years but could not find what he was looking for in a classroom. He then served a full-time mission in Edinburgh Scotland from 1966-1968. He came home with a kilt and the traditional attire and still has it! Shortly after returning home, he was reunited with his high school sweetheart whom he had been writing diligently during his mission. He wrote beautiful love letters and several poems to her while he was serving the 2 ½ years in Scotland.
On February 7, 1969 Monte and Norene Shurtleff were married and sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple. They were married 7 years and were blessed with 3 children, Kelley Lyn, Brent Miller, and Monte Troy.
Monte could not find his passion at college so he pursued his true interest by getting a job at Goodyear Auto. He loved cars that went fast….Corvettes were his favorite. He had a 1963 Corvette convertible and a motorcycle. Racing cars and fixing engines was his passion. Monte’s first marriage dissolved and he was remarried in February 1977 to Shellie Keiper. He was a kind and compassionate man and he took in Shellie’s 2 girls Aundreia and Khristina and adopted them as his own. He and Shellie subsequently had another daughter together, Alyson.
Monte worked for many years at Plateau Mine, a coal mine in Carbon County, UT as a mechanic. He used his self-taught mechanic skills to fix the rigs that hauled coal and supplies underground. He made many friends during those years.
Monte had become inactive at church but came back in 1980 and served faithfully in his ward which included working with the boy scouts. Although he had 3 daughters living with him at the time, in May of 1982 he went on a “fathers and sons” outing with many of those scouts. The group had gone on a motorcycle ride when Monte stopped to fix his bike. He told the group to ride ahead and he would catch up. When he didn’t show up, they went back to find he had wrecked the bike. He had hit his head, was unconscious and not breathing. We don’t know how long his brain was without oxygen when they found him…but he was miraculously alive!
The last half of his life was spend living with his handicaps as a result of the head injury. He suffered many challenging years of physical and mental struggles due to his accident. It was very hard for him to not have the dexterity he had before his accident to work on car engines. His mind told him he could do it but his body was not able to make the connections physically to make it happen…pure frustration!
Despite his disabilities, Monte had an amazing way of making others smile. He would make light of any situation and had the most happy-go-lucky attitude …. most of the time! Anytime you would walk in the front doors of Orem Rehab, Monte would be there to greet you and say “smile’ or “be sweet”! While it has not been an easy road, Monte was a friendly and kind man whose life was spared so we could learn to love like he did.
He was preceded in death by his mother, father and his sister Marianne George. We know that was a joyful reunion! He is survived by his 3 siblings – brother Joseph (Linda), and 2 sisters Christine Holloway (Terry), and Ginny Moon (Jim), his 6 children – Kelley Bolin (Don), Brent, Troy (Wendy), Aundreia Gallegos (Anthony), Khris Houston (Neil), and Alyson Garcia (Chris Grady). He will be missed by all those left behind including 20 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank Orem Rehab and Skilled Nursing staff for all of their loving care during these many years that Monte lived at the facility. He was their longest standing resident and he had many friends and staff members who grew to love him and cared well for him.
