Mohamad Bagher Rahimzadeh
1934~2016
Our Good Looking Mohamad Bagher Rahimzadeh passed away, surrounded by family, on March 13, 2016.
He was born on January 15, 1934 in Isfahan, Iran to Mahmood and Ashraf Rahimzadeh and was one of 10 children. Mohamad immigrated to the United States in 1958 as an international exchange student, one of the first Iranians in Utah. He met his wife, Arthea Cottam, while studying at Dixie College in Saint George; they were married 53 years.
Mohamad would often tell the story of how, though he came from privilege, he traveled to America with only $5 dollars in his pocket and then, by dint of hard work and good fortune, became “the luckiest man in the world.” He always cherished his native Iran, cooking its food every day, drinking glass after glass of hot Persian tea with far too many sugar cubes, and traveling home to visit family frequently; but he was also honored to be a U.S. citizen. His worldview was global, and he was never happier than when traveling through Europe, the Middle East, or the United States with his family.
Those who met Mohamad can testify to how supremely charming and witty he was. His larger-than-life personality lit up rooms. He was never without a smile and never withheld his kisses. Mohamad’s generosity was legendary: nobody will ever know how many young people he helped through college or how many strangers he offered a job to, fed, clothed, or sheltered.
Mohamad deeply loved his family and was a true patriarch. As he never tired of explaining, he was always “The Captain of the Boat.” He was fiercely loyal to his family and took his role as both Daddy and Papa very seriously.
He is survived by his wife, Arthea, their three children Steven (Shahinya), Kevin (Cathleen), and Susan Eyre (Brik), 12 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the staff at Rocky Mountain Care in Riverton and Huntsman Cancer Institute for their support and care of Mohamad.
A memorial will be held in his honor on Saturday, April 2nd at 4:30pm in the LDS meetinghouse located at 3070 East Nila Way, Salt Lake City, Utah. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests making a donation in Mohamad’s name to the Huntsman Cancer Institute at www.huntsmancancer.org.
