Mitsuko Jeannette Sakashita Hayakawa

September 21, 1922 — January 3, 2018

Mitsuko Jeannette Hayakawa, age 95, passed away on January 3, 2018, peacefully in her sleep at home in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was born on September 21, 1922 in Mills, Utah to Fukutaro and Etsuno Sakashita. Her family then moved to Elko, Nevada and later Sacramento, California where she graduated from high school and helped her parents by working in the Bee Cafe, their restaurant business.
During World War II, as with thousands of Japanese-Americans living on the west coast of the United States, the Sakashita family members were evacuated from their residence in Sacramento and sent to the Walerga Assembly Center, then to the Tule Lake Relocation Center. After a stay in Tule Lake, their family was sent to Topaz, Utah Internment Camp.  They subsequently moved to Salt Lake City where she worked at the OK Cafe.  She met Kayo Hayakawa and they were married on January 30, 1946.  The two moved to San Francisco and she was employed by the American Red Cross of San Francisco. She attended Beauty School and worked for Royal Beauty Salon, and then she and Kayo opened a shop known as the Hayakawa Salon of Beauty, which was a favorite among the residents near and far in California.
Jeannette loved to bowl and was one of the first women to bowl a perfect 300 game in San Francisco. On June 27, 1987 she was inducted into the San Francisco Women’s Bowling Association Hall of Fame.
Kayo and Jeannette have one son, Wayne, who lovingly and caringly has devoted his entire life to his parents, watching over them in every possible way. Wayne is an exceptional and talented artist and Jeannette was very proud of his artwork.  His paintings are the pride and enjoyment of the family as well as among many friends who have been privileged to observe or own his works of art.
Jeannette is survived by her husband Kayo and devoted son Wayne, her sister Mary and husband Hiroshi Aramaki, sister in law Jane Beppu Sakashita and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and brothers, George, Toshio and James Hideo.
