Mildred “Mikki” Corrine Hersman

d. July 12, 2022

Mildred “Mikki” Corrine Hersman (September 29, 1919 – July 12, 2022) passed away peacefully, encircled by family, as the sun set behind the blue Oquirrh Mountains. In the remains of the day, her family mourned their loss, in a sweet reflection of 102 years; a life well-lived. Leading up to her passing, Mikki shared her assurance that she’d soon be with her loving husband, Glen David Hersman.
Mikki, the middle child of five, was born in Taylor, Texas, to Edward Sorensen of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin and Adeline Krueger of Oak Grove, Wisconsin. Mikki was the second-to-last sibling standing: Ramona Perry, Dorothy Cox, and Ora Mae Hyatt await her, as Rey Sorensen survives her.
Born into the 1918/1919 Spanish influenza pandemic, Mikki was born to thrive and survive in the many tribulations and joys to come. Her thrifty mentality began early in her teen years as the Great Depression swept the country. Not faint of heart, Mikki began a long and fitting career as a Registered Nurse, working in settings such as oncology, psychiatry, labor and delivery, and many more. Mikki was known for her love of flowers and gardening- her rose bushes being her pride and joy. In their 70s, Mikki and Glen joined the Murray Senior Citizen Center, where Mikki befriended a group of deaf members she was determined to connect with. Mikki then took a class in ASL at the University of Utah and will forever be remembered waving the “I love you” sign to friends and family… and even strangers passing by.
Mikki leaves behind four children, Norman Hersman (Carol), Dan Hersman, Diane Dillman (Malcolm), and Darlene McNeil (Andrew) and five grandchildren: Mathew Hersman, Jennifer Swenson, Keri Conrad, Carson McNeil and Rita McNeil and their families. Mikki was known by her family as patient and kind, stubborn and stoic, gently sarcastic, wonderfully witty and suitably unassuming. Her family smiled and admired when at 96, she went into the DMV to turn in her license when she knew it was time. Then, a month and two days before her passing, she moved into an assisted living facility at her own suggestion. Mikki struck a graceful balance of knowing when it was time to persevere, and when it was time to graciously surrender.
Her immediate family will say their final goodbyes at a private graveside ceremony as per her wishes, and her life will be celebrated by all who knew her for years to come.
