Midori Delores Hamada, 97, passed away Sunday, April 20, 2014, surrounded by family and friends at St. Joseph Villa in Salt Lake City.
She was born February 17, 1917, in Oakley, Wyoming, to Tomoichi Nakano and Shizuno Matsuura. She grew up in Wattis, Carbon County, Utah, and graduated in 1935 from Carbon High School. She married Isamu (Sam) Watanuki in 1938 in Farmington, Utah. They had two sons, Thomas Akira Watanuki and Robert Mitsuo Watanuki. She married Steve Susumi Hamada in 1962, and became second mother to his daughter, Judy Hamada.
Midori was the owner of Aloha Cleaners on 8th West and 1st South for 30 years. She enjoyed traveling and family outings in the Uintas. She loved entertaining at her home, where everyone appreciated her wonderful cooking. She also enjoyed going to Wendover and playing the penny slots. She had hundreds of euphemisms she quoted often, and which will be used by family for years to come. She was a warm, loving, kind, compassionate, funny lady who made friends easily and never gave up on one. Consequently, she is loved and will be fondly remembered by many people.
She is survived by son Tom (Jane) Watanuki; daughters-in-law, Brenda Watanuki and Peggy Watanuki; step-daughter Judy (Fred) Tamagawa; sister Teri Otani; 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, 7 great-great grandchildren, a niece and several nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, son Bobby, brother Tomi Nakano, and sister Chisato (Chris) Clark.
The family would like to thank the nurses and aides at St. Joseph Villa for their loving care and kindness during our mother’s stay. We are forever grateful for the love and friendship that her Villa neighbors Betty, Esther, and Bonnie shared with Midori, as well as the other residents who made her smile. Thank you to Inspiration Hospice for their end-of-life wisdom and care. A special thanks to all the friends who visited her often with treats, gifts, and companionship. She was truly blessed to have so many who loved her.
Her personal creed was to enjoy life, love each other, and spread joy.
