Mickie Kathryn Nordin

October 2, 1932 — May 7, 2022

Mickie Kathryn Nordin lived 89 amazing years, painting the town red with a heart of gold! To know her was to love her. She was born on October 2, 1932 in Clarksville, Arkansas to Jim and Stella Carter. Mickie passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on May 7, 2022.
Mickie was the first of three children, followed by James and Shirley, and loved growing up in the place she always called home – her beloved Arkansas. She begrudgingly moved to Utah with her family as a teenager, leaving behind many cherished friends, relatives, and a life she dearly loved. In true Mickie fashion, she quickly made new life-long friends and grew to love East Carbon. She met and dated Billie Nordin there and they married in 1955. They spent the first part of their married life in Moab and later put down roots in Salt Lake City. Together they raised their two children, Brent and Jama. They were blessed with 6 beautiful grandchildren and one spirited great-granddaughter. Mickie cherished being a Mom and Nana, always making each one feel like they were her favorite. As a family they shared in hard work, travel, road trips, camping, sports, reunions and many memorable holiday gatherings. Several years after their kids were up and out, they divorced after 40 years of marriage.
Mickie had an incredible work ethic and held many positions throughout her life: starting as a box office cashier in her hometown theater, advancing into roles in fashion retail, and reaching her career finale at Costco as a gourmet demonstrator for 17 years, retiring at age 86! Her customers loved her and became fast friends. To top it off, she kept an immaculate home steeped in Southern hospitality. Her pecan, pumpkin, chocolate and pineapple cream pies are legendary… and who could forget her cast iron corn bread, fresh vegetable soup and Arkansas Tacos.
Mickie had a zest for life with an adventurous, yet cautious spirit. She traveled widely and enjoyed experiencing many beautiful places throughout the U.S. and abroad. Her most memorable destinations included Alaska, Europe, Hawaii and the Panama Canal. Some of her favorite pastimes were baking, reading cookbooks, shopping for fancy shoes, entertaining, playing Hand n’ Foot with the “Golden Girls” and Dominoes with her family. She loved road tripping with her friends, brother-n-love Manuel, and sister Shirley (aka Thelma & Louise). Mickie had great rhythm and became an incredible dancer at an early age. She could Jitterbug and “cut a rug” with the best of em! She was an avid sports fan and loved the Arkansas Razorbacks (Sooie pig) and UTES (Ki-yi). We partied, BBQ’d and watched many games as a family, always adorned in red, which happened to be her favorite color anyway!
A private Celebration of Life Service with family and close friends will be held in her honor. The family would like to thank the wonderful medical teams at Intermountain Medical Center and Aspen Ridge for treating and taking care of her in love and kindness. In lieu of flowers, Mickie would have preferred donations to Primary Children’s Hospital.
