Mickel J. Newman, age 68, passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, in the morning of July 20, 2024. Mickel was born in Payson, Utah, on July 27, 1955, to Joseph Reuben and Carma Stringham Newman. He was the second oldest of seven children.
Growing up, Mickel's family needed to move often due to his father's severe medical condition. By high school, he had lived in 12 different places, including with relatives, before his family was able to settle in Star Valley, Wyoming.
During high school and before his mission, Mickel enjoyed competitive bowling and was proud that he had won enough money in competitions to buy himself a motorcycle.
In 1974, Mickel served as a faithful missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Louisville, Kentucky Mission. Even though Mickel had a shy disposition, his deep love for the Lord and the people helped him experience many miracles during his dedicated service.
After completing his mission, Mickel moved to Utah, where he met the love of his life, LaRisa Jo Nebeker. They were married in the Ogden, Utah Temple on July 30, 1983. Together they supported and raised their five children in West Valley City. In October 2021, Mickel retired after 35 years of working for the Internal Revenue Service.
Mickel enjoyed photography; when his children were small he had a red-light photo room. In the last few months of his life, he bought a DSLR and delighted in capturing everything that brought him joy, including: family, animals, landscapes, and flowers.
Mickel was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who cared deeply for each family member, and often put their needs before his own. One of his favorite pastimes was spending time playing games with his children and grandchildren. Mickel stayed young at heart.
He also had a great love for family history work and enjoyed searching for and finding distant ancestors. Filling out pedigree charts and seeing how far back the lines could be traced was exciting to him.
Mickel’s life was a testament of love, faith, and unwavering commitment to family. He will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his siblings: JoAnne (Stan) Clapham, Gloria (Carl) Hamilton, Jared (Rebecca) Newman, Lorna (Tim) Jensen, and Alma (Gail) Newman.
Mickel is also survived by his children: Shannon (McWayne) Mumford, Jeannie (Patrick) Craig, Melissa (Byron) Anderton, Todd (Losaline) Newman, Cammie Newman; and nine grandchildren: Linkin Craig, Elius Chavez, Maylee Mumford, Jocelyn Mumford, Jaxon Craig, Lyrik Edgar, Eve Mumford, Asher Anderton, and Aspen Mumford.
He is preceded in death by his wife, LaRisa Jo Nebeker Newman; his sister, Audrey Newman; and his parents: Joseph Reuben Newman and Carma Stringham Newman.
