Michelle Macdonald

d. September 29, 2021

On September 29, 2021, Michelle Macdonald (nee Swapp), age 59, passed away. She died peacefully surrounded by family after a long, brave battle against cancer.
Born in Okinawa, Japan in 1962, Michelle’s family relocated to the U.S. in her infancy. After marrying her sweetheart and best friend Lonnie in 1983, the two began their family, welcoming Joshua Douglas in 1984 and Trevor Andrew in 1987. Lonnie, Josh, and Trevor were the lights of Michelle’s life and she showed her love through countless acts of selfless service and quiet dedication.
Michelle’s love for her family and friends was intuitive. She knew instinctively how others needed to be appreciated, meeting their needs without asking for anything in return. Her home was never without friends or family and her Thanksgiving, Christmas, and dinner table was always full, each guest leaving with leftovers and plans to get together again soon. She underestimated her own impact and will be deeply missed by her extensive community.
Michelle was determined to live life to the fullest and did not allow her cancer diagnosis to hold her back. Despite tiring treatments and many surgeries, Michelle traveled the world, sewed countless quilts as gifts, visited Primary Children’s Hospital with her therapy dog, mastered bread-making, and somehow found time to ensure that each of her “people” were provided for and happy.
A lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Michelle had a strong personal testimony of The Gospel. She strove to follow the footsteps of her Savior and lent her many talents to her church. Though she will be deeply missed, Michelle was eager to be reunited with her husband of 36 years, Lonnie.
Michelle was preceded in death by her husband Lonnie. She is survived by: her sons Trevor (Katie Van Hazelen) and Josh (Larina); her honorary daughter Alyssa (Boone Bolinder); her grandchildren (Carson, Mika, Natalie, Jane, Miles, Lewis, Finn, and Lottie); her mother; her brothers; and her beloved Bernese Mountain Dogs, Gretchen and Annabelle.
The family extends their special thanks to the many people who gave of their time to help Michelle, including but not limited to: Kammie and Don Swapp; Dr. Saundra Buys; Preot, Derek, and Bethanny Oaks; Amy and Brian Beitler; Andrea and Gregg Van Hazelen; Johanna and Claire Harless; Priscilla and Fred Dominguez; and Brynn Davies.
A graveside service will be held at The Memorial Lakeview Cemetery in Bountiful on Thursday, October 7, at 11:00 AM. The services will be followed by a private luncheon for close friends and family. If you are the recipient of one of Michelle’s quilts, please bring it to the services. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Michelle can be made to the Expect Miracles Foundation or Intermountain Therapy Animals.
