Michele “Shellie” Mousley Weed

October 27, 1955 — May 28, 2016

Michele “Shellie” Mousley Weed passed away on the morning of May 28th, 2016 due to complications resulting from Early Onset Alzheimer’s disease. She was 60 years old.
Born October 27, 1955 to Woodrow Vernon Mousley and Myrtle Irene Tenney, Shellie spent the first several years of her life in Los Angeles before moving to Morgan Hill, CA, where she grew up. She graduated from Live Oak High School, and attended Brigham Young University at the age of 17, on scholarship. A diligent student, Shellie loved learning and followed the footsteps of her father, a professor of education at San Jose State University, by graduating in elementary education and becoming a full-time teacher at Rock Canyon Elementary in Provo. She taught full-time until the day she gave birth to her first child, and substitute taught off and on thereafter.
She met Stew Weed in a BYU ward and they fell in love as the two of them attended regular temple sessions together in the LDS Provo Temple for their respective church callings. On June 6th, 1979, they married in the Salt Lake City Temple. They moved into their first home in Kearns, Utah in 1984 where they both served in leadership callings in the LDS church and made lifelong friendships. In 1996, they moved to Aloha, OR to be closer to Shellie’s family who had centralized in North Bend, OR. They remained in Aloha until about two years before her death, at which point they spent nearly a year in North Bend surrounded by beloved family before moving to a care facility in St. Anthony, ID.
Shellie had a zest for life, and a love for all of God’s children. She loved books and instilled in her children a love of reading. For many years she enjoyed making crafts with friends and liked giving them away. She adored Christmas music and relished in the Christmas season, putting up her Christmas decorations the day after Thanksgiving and leaving them up as long as she could.
Shellie served in many leadership positions very young, being called to be Relief Society President three times, and serving various times as Primary President, and in other presidencies and callings. This was very difficult for her with five young children, and a husband who was serving as Bishop and in a Stake Presidency. She spent several years of her disease repeatedly commenting on how good the Lord was to let her serve in these capacities in those early years, despite the difficulty, knowing she would get Alzheimer’s so young. Her commitment to the Lord and to serving and loving His children was paramount, and her submission to His will in all things was the anthem of her life.
Above all else, Shellie was the perfect mother to her five children. Because many of them suffer from Attention Deficit Disorder, she spent many hours helping them manage their executive functioning—finding lost lunch boxes, finishing late projects, and scheduling and helping them fulfill all appointments and responsibilities. (She stopped short of helping her sons earn Eagle Scouts saying, “I have no desire to earn my Eagle Scout three times.”) She was an adept listener, and was a soothing comfort to her children in times of distress. She raised her children to have, among other things, a deep love and empathy for other people, and a deep connection to their Savior, and a love of His Gospel.  Up to and including the day she died, her disposition was one of gratitude, laughter, and complete faith in the Lord, even when things were brutally difficult. Her husband and children continue that legacy.
Shellie is preceded in death by her father, Woodrow Mousley, and by her brother, David Mousley.
She is survived by her mother, Irene Tenney Mousley, of North Bend, OR; her brother, Chris (Holley) Mousley of Kingman, AZ; her sisters, Lani (Richard) Moore of Orem, UT; Lori (Steve) Tersigni of North Bend, OR; and April Davis of North Bend, OR; her faithful husband, Stewart Weed; her five children, Joshua (Lolly) Weed of Covington, WA; Christopher Weed of Rexburg, ID; Jennilyn (Justin) Pratt of Taylorsville, UT; Maquel (Nathan) Welch of Lincoln, NE; and Chad (McCall) Weed of Mesa, AZ; numerous nieces and nephews; and her seven beloved grandchildren, Annalyn, Olivia, Tessa and Alexa Weed, and Alice, Parley and Ezra Pratt.
