Michael Mitchell

December 28, 1938 — September 7, 2017

Michael Grant Mitchell, age 78, died on 7 September 2017 surrounded by his family in his home in South Jordan, Utah. Mike was born 28 December 1938 in Guisborough, Yorkshire, England and raised in Brighton, England on the south coast. Mike was married to Linda Louise North for 34 years, and later to Bonnie Jean Mellor for 24 years.
As a young English teenager, Mike came to America because of his love of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and of his desire to be closer to the Saints. He joined the US Army in 1958 serving in many states across the country including two tours to Alaska and a tour to Vietnam. While in the Army he rose through the enlisted ranks and was given a direct commission as a second lieutenant in the Finance Corps. He retired as a Major in 1978 after a successful 20 year career. After military retirement he built a successful bookkeeping and tax preparation business in Salt Lake City.
Mike was active in his children’s lives serving as a scout leader, soccer coach, active in Civil Air Patrol, and served in many other capacities. He served as the second commissioner of Utah Youth Soccer Association greatly expanding it to include girls’ soccer as well as an indoor soccer program adding a competitive league to the organization. He loved the Church and served in whatever capacity he was called. He and Bonnie served a military relations mission in the Hawaii Honolulu Mission. Later in life he became very active in the Utah Democrat party serving as the Salt Lake County Committee Treasurer and running for State Auditor. Mike was passionate about learning, reading as many as 200 books a year. At times, his book collection was numbered in the thousands. He also loved flying, obtaining a private pilot’s license continuing to fly a homemade sport airplane and attending airshows and fly-ins until a few years ago. Above all, Mike’s greatest service was to his seven biological and three step children as well as the many grand and great grandchildren he had. His gift to them was his time. He loved playing cards and other games, hiking, camping, biking, and attending special events. His legacy of unconditional love will be felt among them forever.
Mike is survived by his wife Bonnie (Mellor),brothers Tony (Adriana) and Paul (Elizabeth), sister Dawn (Gary Minor), sons, Dennis (Tami), Bill (Ulrike), Richard (Kanda), Tom (Leighanna), and Tim (Starla), daughters, Wanda (Jay Zamber), Cheryl (Mickelsen), Barbra (Dave Gallegos), Debra (Jeff Vaughn), and Tammy (Brad Collen), as well as 50 grandchildren and 43 great grandchildren.
