Michael Lowell Aylworth

July 2, 1942 — June 6, 2022

Michael Lowell Aylworth, 79, passed away at the Legacy House of Taylorsville on June 6, 2022. He was born July 3, 1942, in San Francisco, California, where his father was stationed in the United States Navy. His father, Lowell Parker Aylworth, and his mother, Katherine Ann Jones Aylworth, were each skilled in electronics and worked for the military during World War II. Their work was secret, and they were sworn to tell no one, even each other, what they worked on. Later they learned that they had worked on the atomic bomb dropped over Hiroshima, Japan.
When Michael was three years old, his family moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, where he was tested and found to have superior intelligence. When he was almost five years old, he was carefully trying to cross the street but was hit by a car driven by a young man. Later, when this man was grown, he was one of Michael’s teachers in junior high. After the accident, Michael was tested again and found to now have a learning disability. This was a challenge for Michael the rest of his life.
Following graduation from Granite High School in 1960, Michael enlisted in the United States Coast Guard, where he was on active duty for two years and then in the reserves for another thirteen years. One experience during his service was he helped search for the three escaped prisoners from Alcatraz.
He did custodial work, was a security guard, worked at the University of Utah, and at Richard’s Candy. He was a pressman at Publlishers Press in Salt Lake City.
He married Lorraine Agnes Knapton, who was killed in a car accident along with Michael’s mother and his sister, Marsha. Together they were blessed with one daughter, Elaine Aylworth Treber. He then married Adele Monica Holy-Kreutzer with whom he had two wonderful children: a son, Jarod (Rachel Michael) Aylworth and a daughter, Monica Ann Aylworth Trippy. They were later divorced.
He met Ruth Ann Hadley at a dance, but then remembered he had actually met her before when he and his father had gone to Ruth’s house in North Ogden to pick cherries. They were married February 14, 1978, for time in the Ogden Utah Temple and later sealed for eternity in the Salt Lake Temple. They chose Valentine’s Day to be married so everyone would know that they are eternal sweethearts. Michael and Ruth served as missionaries to the Utah State Penitentiary, where they served in the Oquirrh Chapel. He was also a home teacher.
Michael was a romantic. He would bring gifts or send notes or flowers, and he kept everything his children gave him. He loved dogs, going fishing (he didn’t fish much, but enjoyed “going”). He had a bad memory, and yet he never forgot to bless the food at meals. He was patriotic and always saluted the flag. He loved poetry and reciting poems. He also sang. He loved the hymns of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, especially, “I Am a Child of God.”  He was a good father and loved the time spent with his children, his eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, all of whom he loved dearly. He loved The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but most of all he loved his Heavenly Father and wanted to do everything He wanted him to do.
Michael loved the good people at Legacy House of Taylorsville, where he and Ruth lived, and the help so many people gave him. He always had a smile for them, and they loved his smile. He is survived by his wife, Ruth, and former wife, Adele, his children, Elaine (David Treber, Washington), Jarod (Texas), and Monica (Texas), and his eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by brothers Daniel P. Aylworth (California), and Kim Aylworth, Bryan Aylworth, both of Idaho, and Paul Richards, of Oregon.
He was predeceased by his parents, Lowell and Katherine, his wife, Lorraine, sister, Marsha, and his stepmother, Geraldine Christensen Aylworth. Services will be held Thursday morning, June 9, 2022, at Murray Memorial Mortuary, 5850 South 900 East, Murray, Utah. There will be a viewing from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. with the funeral at 10:30.
