Merrill Hammond Maughan passed away on October 25, 2024, in Bakersfield, CA, at the age of 84.
Born on December 29, 1939, Merrill grew up in Providence, Utah, and attended South Cache High School. He went on to Utah State University, where he played football and ran track, later transferring to the University of Utah to complete his degree. Merrill built a successful career in the oil and gas industry, beginning at Metro Oil and eventually founding Golden Eagle Refining. His work was his passion, and he dedicated himself fully to it.
Merrill is survived by his daughter, Marianne Maughan-Pritchett, and her three daughters: Talese Pritchett, Taryn Alcala (husband, Paco) and their son, Banks, Merrill’s cherished great-grandson; Tavia Cooper (husband, Dillon); his son Michael Maughan (wife Denita) and their two children, Mikaela and Maddox; and his son Marc Maughan (wife Grayson) and their children, Miles and Adelia. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Lovisa Maughan; his beloved wife of over 50 years, Barbara “Mimi” Maughan; and his siblings, Datus, Donna, Claire, and Nina.
In keeping with Merrill’s wishes, no public funeral services will be held. A private ceremony will be held to lay him to rest alongside his wife.
