Merna Maden

Merna Besella Thurman Madden, age 102 years, passed away Sunday, November 1, 2015, at the home of a daughter in Provo, Utah. She was born March 6, 1913, in Grover, Wyoming, the 4th of 10 children of Charles Alvin and Zilpha Ann Lowder Thurman.
She married Charles Benjamin Madden on January 26, 1936 at Los Angeles, California. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. They had 6 children: Charles Benjamin, Merna Anne, Joan Elizabeth, Sylvia Jean, Thurman Edward (Ted), and Susan Deborah.
She graduated from Blackfoot (Idaho) High School in 1930 and later graduated from Mt. San Antonio Jr. College, in Pomona, California, as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She worked in hospitals in Covina, CA, and Provo, UT, where she worked many years in the emergency room. She was also a School Bus Driver in Gila Bend, AZ, and for the San Gabriel Valley, CA, School District.
Her passion was Genealogy. She and her husband spent many hours in the genealogy libraries in Los Angeles, CA and Salt Lake City, UT. They traveled extensively throughout the eastern United States, and the British Isles doing research. They later devoted many hours to the Name Extraction Program. In 1990 she completed a mission at the Family History Center in Salt Lake City, UT.
She was a talented artist, specializing in oils on canvas.
Her memory was amazing. Even into her late 90s she could remember practically everything she had ever read, and could recite facts, figures, events, histories, and biographies.
She was a life-long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints magnifying many callings over the years, including Relief Society President and Young Women’s President. She also taught Gospel Doctrine for many years.
She is survived by 5 of her children: Charles (Vicki) Madden of Salt Lake City, UT; Merna Anne Talbot of Provo, UT; Joan Carlen of Provo, UT; Thurman (Colleen) Madden of Venice, UT; and Susan Madden of Magna, UT. She is also survived by 2 brothers: Newell Thurman of Westminster, CA; and Ivin (Delores) Thurman of Midvale, UT; and 17 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, a daughter, Sylvia (age 6), a grandson, Jimmy Talbot, her father and mother; and 7 brothers & sisters: Thora Tetley, Varion Thurman, Willard Thurman, Ada Wallwork, Edward Thurman, Mable Larson, and LaRell Bird.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 7, 2015 at noon in the LDS chapel at 8825 S. Monroe St., Sandy, UT 84070, with a viewing at 10:30am.
Interment will be at the Redwood Memorial Park at 6500 S. Redwood Rd., Salt Lake City, UT.
