Melvin W. Harris (Curly)

July 12, 1925 — April 29, 2021

Bountiful, Utah- Melvin W. Harris, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend passed away peacefully on April 29, 2021 at the age of 95. Mel was born July 12, 1925 in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Melvin W. Harris, Sr. and Sarah Anne Beaton McIntyre. Mel’s early years were spent in Victoria, Canada, and Salt Lake City, Utah. He graduated from South High School in 1942 at the age 16 and joined the military. He was proud of his country and honorably served in the Navy during World War II. After he was discharged, he enlisted in the Air Force, nature, and the outdoors. He particularly enjoyed a good fishing trip. He married Carrel Jean McCarrel and was later divorced. He married Donna Maria Boweter September 17, 1949. They were married for 71 years and deeply devoted to each other. Mel loved each member of his family unconditionally and was a man of impeccable integrity and honesty. He was employed at Hill Air Force Base of 33 years before retiring in 1982. During this period, he worked on high national security missile defense projects. He was also employed as a realtor for 20 years after his retirement from Hill.
Survived by wife Donna, three daughters, Gaye England (Glenn), Shelly Verno (Dave), Diane Lopez, 9 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and sister Marilyn Novikoff. Mel was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, having served in many callings including stake high counsel, several bishoprics and as Bishop.
A viewing will be held Wednesday May 5, 2021 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. Graveside Services will be Thursday May 6, 2021 at 1:00 PM with a one hour viewing prior to the service. The viewing and interment will be at Memorial Estates Lakeview, 1640 E. Lakeview Dr., Bountiful, UT.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Creekside Senior Living, Julie at Brio Hospice, and Kristy from the VA for their kind and tender loving care of Mel the past several years. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Humanitarian Aid Fund in Mel’s name.
