Mel was born on December 26, 1931 in Salt Lake City, UT. To Melvin Edson Dunkley Sr. and Mary Dorthella (Wood) Dunkley.
Mel married Sandra Lorraine Gray on November 16, 1956 in the Salt Lake City temple.
Mel had many hobbies and was an avid hunter and loved hiking and swimming at Snowbird. He was a huge fan of Disneyland where he first visited on his honeymoon. He was a huge fan of “The Price Is Right” and “Days of our Lives”.
Mel loved soccer not only as a fan, but also spent time coaching.
Mel graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from BYU in 1960 and a Master’s degree from the University of Utah in 1971. No matter who won a big game dad would say his team “won.”
Mel taught school and also worked in the media center at John C Freemont Elementary (libraries) for almost 30 years. He loved reading stories to the children. You could always bet that each character would have their own unique voice.
He served in the military in both the Army and Air National Guard. He retired as a Master Sargeant at age 60. He proudly served as a missionary for 2 ½ years serving in his beloved Samoa where he developed a deep love for the Polynesian people and culture. He held many positions in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints including being ordained to the office of a Seventy, as well as, a Salt Lake Temple worker.
Melvin is survived by His wife of over 65 years, Sandra -South Jordan, Son Jeffery Dunkley – South Jordan, Son Thomas (Maureen) Dunkley-Sandy, Daughter Julie Benavidez (Stacy) -Alamosa, CO, Son Scott (Stephanie) Dunkley-Riverton, Daughter Teresa (Randy) Pirami -South Jordan, and Son-in-law Donald Harmond III – Murray. Brothers James (Joyce) Dunkley and Paul (Bonnie) Dunkley, Sister Helen (Niel) Christensen and 17 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, daughter Melanie Harmond, sister Betty Lynn John.
