Mele Kapiolani Taufa, affectionately known as Lani, passed away peacefully on August 7, 2024, at the University of Utah Hospital. Born on October 21, 1956, in Ha’apai, Tonga. She was the beloved daughter of Amelia Tomenika Ha'ungatau and Siaosi Ongolea Afu.
Lani's life was a testament to love, kindness, and devotion. She was a beacon of light to everyone who knew her, always exuding warmth and compassion. Her joyous spirit and generous heart left an indelible mark on all who crossed her path. A God-fearing woman, Lani dedicated her life to the service of others, embodying the true essence of selflessness and love until her last breath.
Lani shared a beautiful life with her devoted husband, Ikani Taufa. Together, they raised their cherished daughter, Ilaisaane Matei Maka, who predeceased Lani. Despite this profound loss, Lani's heart remained full, especially when surrounded by her eight beloved grandchildren: Kapiolani Fiefia Maka, Selaima Naini Maka, Fineeva Poumana Lutui Maka, Semisi Lutui Fiefia Maka, Ikani Taufa Maka, Opeti Lauteau Maka, Siaosi Afu Maka, and Asena Lavelua Ivailahi Maka. Her great-grandchildren, Ilaisaane Matei Fiefia Maka Tuifua and Kapiolani Kosima Matei Maka, were the newest joys in her life, bringing her immense pride and happiness.
Lani's siblings, Saane (Asaeli) Mokofisi, Lona (Lisiate) Palu, Melolini (Teoli) Fiefia, Lupe (Peni) Latai, Kava (Susette) Afu, and George (Nina) Afu, will forever remember her as a loving sister whose laughter and love brightened their lives.
Throughout her life, Lani was known for her unwavering faith and her dedication to her family. She lived a full and vivacious life, filled with laughter and love. Her legacy of kindness and generosity will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her.
Mele Kapiolani Taufa will be deeply missed, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of her family and friends. Rest in peace, dear Lani. Your unconditional love and light will never be forgotten.
