Our Beloved Mother: Mele Lola Maumau
Born: May 11, 1946, Fou’i, Tongatapu, Tonga. Sealed to Samiu and Sita Lomu, in the LDS Temple
Died: September 27, 2024, Sandy, UT, peacefully in her home surrounded by her family after a hard-fought fight for many months with cancer
As an exceptional and exemplary wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother she loved life, enjoyed crocheting, making silk ribbon roses, taking care of her rose gardens, singing, teaching, reading, and spending time with her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. As life slowed down, she loved reading from every good book, listening to inspirational talks, and messages, and attending the temple as time permitted.
Her many hobbies and enjoyments in life were also her many God-given gifts and talents, all of them woven into her Christ-like character and divine nature. She lovingly used them to bless the lives of many throughout her lifetime.
In her work life, she was a schoolteacher in her native Island, Tonga. After she immigrated to the United States, she worked for Abbott Medical in Taylorsville, Utah for many years where she was a supervisor before retiring. While working at Abbott Medical she was given many awards for her contributions and at the same time, her entrepreneurial spirit allowed her to create a few businesses that thrived. In 2005 she decided to retire from her professional life completely and lived her faith more purposefully and intentionally.
As a devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she loved our Heavenly Father, His Son Jesus Christ, and the sacred bond with His Spirit, The Holy Ghost. She lived, loved, and exemplified faith throughout her life as a disciple and servant of Jesus Christ. She served in many capacities including Relief Society President, Gospel Doctrine teacher, and ward chorister, always serving with humility and vigor. She loved being a chorister in every way and would often be found at the Jordan River Temple leading the music in the Tongan Temple Sessions. She was regularly called to be the chorister in family functions as well. She freely shared her singing talent every opportunity she had with her beloved husband playing the harmonica beside her. She memorized every Tongan hymn and was proficient in leading them. She served along her husband faithfully in many church callings from their time in Tonga to their time in the United States. The most recent was from 2016-2018 in the Tonga, Nukualofa Mission as senior missionaries.
She cherished and treasured her time being a devoted wife and doting mother of eight children, grandmother of thirty-plus, and great-grandmother of two and counting. She adored her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and to her, family was her greatest accomplishment.
She is survived by her beloved husband Tevita Finau Maumau. Her children Sisilia (John) Morey, Maake (Stephanie), Akosita (Mone) Kupu, Salina (Paul) Latu, Tevita Jr. (Talia), Lola Marie (Bernard) Talanoa, Takai, many grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her precious son Moses Vahai (at 5 years old, 1983) and grandchildren: Paul Metui Latu Jr, Lile Genevieve Maumau, and Joy Maumau.
