Max Greenwood Derrick, Jr

October 13, 1935 — May 26, 2022

Max Greenwood Derrick, Jr. October 13, 1935 – May 26, 2022, took one last nap in his favorite easy chair, tablet in hand where he might have been doing one of his favorite things: checking the weather in New York, Galveston, Phoenix and Palm Springs—cities where his children lived. He died peacefully from the natural causes of aging. He is predeceased by his daughter, Nannette, his brothers Danny and Dave (“Plum”) Derrick and both of his parents, Max Derrick Sr. and Mary Riley Scott. He is also predeceased by his first wife Deanna Davis Egan and his second wife, Marilyn Bailey. He is survived by his children Steve (Patty), Layne (Ken), Cristi (Jim) and Jennifer and his sister Melissa (“Bay”) Johnson. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Jason, Holly and Sam and five great-grandchildren, Kylee, Anthony, Harley, Haven and Zoie.
His childhood was pretty rough, being raised alone by Max Sr. and there were events and relationships that weighed heavily on him throughout his life. As an adult, family was everything to him, even if it was hard for him to convey it in words. He compensated by splurging on Christmases, taking the family on camping and boating trips in the summer, and snow skiing in the winter—though later in life he would curse the cold and snow when he had to shovel it. One of the highlights of his life was being on Jason’s pit crew during his racing days out at the Rocky Mountain Raceway from 2007 to 2014; it was another way for him to stay close to family with the added bonus of being an opportunity to indulge in his passion for cars.
Dad spent his career driving trucks, mostly in the Intermountain area. Alas, the family agrees his driving skills retired when he did. He had a wry sense of humor and it was easy to make him laugh. Before covid-19 hit, he was active in his community where he was a proud member of the Murray Senior Recreation Center Advisory Board.
Max lived an honorable life and he was an honorable and humble man. Most of all he was very very loved. “Grandpa Bear” will be truly missed.
His children will be holding a celebration of life on August 20, 2022 at Memorial Redwood between 1:00 and 3:00 pm.
