Mavis E. Haglund

April 6, 1933 — November 25, 2021

Mavis E. Haglund (“Grandma Mavis”) passed away on November 25, 2021 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Born “Eleanor Mavis” to John and Minnie Olson on April 6, 1933 in Marsh Grove Township, Marshall County, MN, she was raised on their family farm with four beloved siblings, Millie, Janice, James, and Jerry. Mavis was baptized at Westaker Lutheran Church and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, both in Newfolden MN. She graduated in 1951 from Newfolden High School, where she sang in the chorus and was on staff for the school newspaper. That same year, she married Lawrence Haglund at Nazareth Lutheran Church. Although they later divorced, Mavis was blessed with seven healthy children that she raised steadfastly through hardship and multiple moves between Big Fork, Greenbush, Badger, Holt, and Thief River Falls, MN.
Mavis never lost her fondness for the country, even after becoming a city girl, and delighted in reminiscing with her sisters and brothers by phone and mail. Mavis was also a life-long learner. Her thirst for knowledge took her to Northland Community College in 1974, where she excelled in theater, art, and history, ultimately earning an Associate of Arts degree in Sociology. Soon thereafter she was baptized in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and later endowed in the Jordan River Temple. She moved to Utah to begin a new phase of life, working for O.C. Tanner Jewelry Company for 16 years until her retirement, and as an Avon representative for 26.
Mavis was a considerate, caring, and loving sister, aunt, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother and was loved dearly by her family and siblings. She enjoyed nothing more than to be with her family, especially the little children. She treated every child as precious, showing interest in their individuality and never forgetting a name or a birthday, even the great-great grandchildren and step-children. She was always thinking of everyone before herself. Mavis also loved listening to music (especially guitars), recording her family history, drawing, writing, watching football, and doing laundry (her favorite!) She had a special fondness for Elvis and Jon Bon Jovi.
Mavis is survived by her children, Michael (Estrelita) Haglund of Rush City, MN; Loretta (Brad) Lane of West Valley City, UT; David Haglund of Thief River Falls, MN; Darrell (Nadine) Haglund of Beaver Dam, AZ; Jonnie Haglund of West Valley City, UT; and LaDawn Haglund of Phoenix, AZ; 18 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, and a growing number of great-great grandchildren; her siblings Millie Everson of Grand Forks, ND; Janice (Willis) Grochow of Warren, MN; and Jerry (Darlene) Olson of Newfolden, MN; sister-in-law Marge Olson of Newfolden, MN; and numerous other nephews, nieces, and other relatives.
Mavis was preceded in death by her parents, John and Minnie Olson; her son, Randy Lee Haglund; her brother James Olson; brother-in-law Arnold G Everson; Lawrence Haglund; James Lee English (LaDawn’s father); her niece, Traci Olson; and her nephew and Godson, Wayne Grochow.
