Maurine Henderson

June 17, 1918 — July 19, 2015

Maurine Henderson passed away quietly, peacefully, on the afternoon of July 19, 2015, age 97 years. Born June 17, 1918, in Downey, Idaho, to John E. and Cloah Gunter Criddle, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. LaVell M. Henderson, her parents, and siblings Hazel, Reed, Jean, and Calvin. She leaves behind three daughters, Janet Landerman (Richard), Jeanne Dickey (Doug), and Linda Buchman (David), 9 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. A faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Maurine served in many callings through the years in several locations, including Idaho, Florida, Wisconsin, Illinois, Oklahoma, Minnesota, and Utah. Her life was single-mindedly devoted to her husband and family and to the Lord. She was always serving others in many quiet ways. She was well-educated, a graduate of Utah State University, and was a lifelong avid reader and Scrabble champion. Maurine was a talented musician, played the piano with gusto, and had a lovely alto voice. She had a quick wit and a ready smile. She never spoke ill of anyone.
Maurine traveled extensively with her husband, visiting Europe, Great Britain, Asia, Hawaii, Alaska, Canada, and Mexico. She and LaVell were physically active as long as their health permitted, pursuing many outdoor activities including sailing, fishing, hiking, gardening, beekeeping, and Nordic skiing. They loved to spend time with family at their cabin near Brighton, where she could often be found up a tall ladder, pushing the snowmobile out of a drift, or handing tools to LaVell. She was a marvelous cook and provided many delicious meals for family and friends. The Hendersons had multitudes of friends from all over the world and delighted in sending and receiving Christmas greetings each year. How could this tiny woman leave such a big hole in our lives?
Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 23, at 11 a.m. at Mountain View Memorial Chapel, 3115 E. 7800 South. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the Memorial Estates cemetery in Cottonwood Heights, Utah.
The family would like to thank the CNAs and nurses at Sunrise Senior Living of Sandy and Brighton Hospice. Special thanks to Janet Alanis and Heather Swafford for their loving care in Maurine’s final months.
