Matauaina Fa’Amele Toilolo

March 28, 1929 — October 19, 2018

Matauaina passed away peacefully at home on Friday, October 19, 2018 at about 8:45AM surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Matauaina was born on March 28, 1929 in Musumusu, Western Samoa. Her parents were Ioane and Levei Mainuu. She is the oldest of two brothers and three sisters. She married Fa’asuamanu Lofia Toilolo, Sr. of Malaela, Western Samoa on October 5, 1947 and together they had 17 children. Five of their children died in infancy and a son passed away at 40 years old in 1998.
Matauaina and her husband moved their family from Samoa to Hawaii in 1978 for a better future and where her husband later died on August 16, 1994 leaving her a widow for 24 years. Matauina resumed the responsibilities of both a mother and father for her family for years and has done well in raising her children.
Being a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother was her greatest accomplishment in life. She will be truly missed in upcoming family reunions, holiday gatherings and most especially weekly Sunday dinners and family home evenings with her children.
When her youngest son returned home from serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Matauaina left home to serve a mission herself in the Apia, Samoa Mission. This was the 2nd best accomplishment of her life and a goal set with her husband prior to his passing. She started out as a proselyting missionary and ended as a Temple worker for the Samoa Apia temple.
Matauaina loves to garden. Everywhere she moved, she plants a garden and shares with others her harvest. She also loves to sew and makes majority of her own clothes. Her favorite is cooking and baking for her family. Her grandchildren often enjoy her baked goods such as bread, muffins, cakes made from scratch, banana bread, Samoan masi (crackers) and most especially her cocoa rice and panikeke.
Perhaps, the best and most important part of Matauina’s life is her love for her Heavenly Father. She is an avid scriptorian and can quote for you any scripture. She serves wholeheartly on any church calling she is given and called to.
Matauaina is survived by her daughters: Peti Toilolo, Lusi (Wayne) Talili, Motuga Siolo and Lavei (Sione) Taufa. Sons: Lofia (Maleka) Faasuamanu Toilolo, Sofeni (Malepe) Toilolo, Sefuluai (Terrie) Toilolo, Afatia Toilolo, Ioelu (Niupele) Toilolo, Lanutausala (Barbara) Toilolo and Fa’asuamanu Toilolo, Jr. , 45 grandchildren, 76 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren, brother, Vaiau Mainu’u, Sisters Oketopa Sali, Pepe Mainuu and Avei Fasimalo
