Mary Petersen

July 31, 1946 — June 7, 2014

West Valley- Mary Lynn Petersen, 67, passed away peacefully on June 7, 2014, in Salt Lake City, Utah, surrounded by family. Mary was born July 31, 1946 in Gunnison, Utah to Francis and Ora Gregerson Petersen. She was preceded in death by her parents and two of her siblings and their spouses–Floyd (Kathy), and Sandra (Ed) Backus.
She was the third child of six and grew up on the family farm in Centerfield, Utah. She graduated from Gunnison Valley High School, received her Associate of Science from Snow College, and a business degree from Stevens-Henager College. She then went to work for Mark Steel Corp for 41 years until her retirement in 2010.
As a child, Mary loved her horse, Sally, who she rode daily, often from sunrise to sunset, while roaming the family farm with her brother, Floyd. She also loved to read, bowl, and tend her rose bushes. She was an accomplished seamstress, having learned from her mother. As a young adult, she could often be found performing in a play or singing in a choir. As an adult, she was very active in the community. She volunteered for years at Cottonwood Hospital, and was a dedicated visiting teacher in the LDS Church. Mary was a social butterfly—she loved to meet people, and made friends wherever she went!
The greatest joy in Mary’s life was her daughter, Amber, and her grandchildren. Mary surrounded herself with many friends, and willingly gave love and support to anyone in need. She made special blankets for her grandchildren, who she considered her “sunshines.” She never stopped serving others, even when she was confined to a wheelchair towards the end. She put others first, even making blankets for other residents at the care center where she resided.
Mary is survived by her siblings Faye Boyer (Ken), Lyle, Morris, as well as her daughter, Amber (Ken) Robison, grandchildren, Emma & Seth, and many nieces and nephews. Special thanks to Avalon West Rehab and Promise Hospital for their tender care.
A memorial service in honor of Mary will be held on Saturday, July 12, at 9:30 am, at the LDS Church located at 3935 S 1500 W, West Valley. Friends and family are invited to gather at 9:00 to visit. Interment will follow at 2:30 in Centerfield, Utah
