Mary (Maria) Rebecca Romero

March 2, 1930 — March 13, 2019

Our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away at her home on Wednesday, March 13, 2019 surrounded by her loving family. Mary was born to Edonila and Florencio Martinez in Penasco, New Mexico. She graduated from high school and completed two years of college. Mary married Raquel Romero on August 9, 1953 and subsequently moved from New Mexico to Utah where they raised four children in West Jordan, Utah.
Throughout Mary’s life she worked primarily in the retail sector. She will be fondly remembered for her famous apple pies which no one could ever duplicate. Mary was an avid reader and her hobbies included knitting and quilting. Mary made it a goal to create for each grandchild and great-grandchild a beautiful knitted baby blanket which they now will cherish forever. All of her children were also fortunate enough to be the recipients of her handcrafted quilts. Mary never missed a chance to go camping and fishing and loved a quick trip to Wendover whenever the opportunity presented itself. Perhaps the most admirable belief Mary held was that obtaining a higher education was exceedingly important and she scrimped and saved to send extra money to a grandchild who was going to college. Mary placed a high value on hard work and the desire to better oneself through education. Mary will be sorely missed by her family and friends. Mary was the best wife, mother, grandmother and great- grandmother a family could possibly ever have and will never be forgotten. Without question, Mary’s joy was her family.
Mary came from a large family and her siblings and their respective spouses include: Angie (Hector) Atencio, Bertha (Ernest) Cordova, Joe (Alicia) Martinez, Connie Trujillo, Rosie (Harrold) Gutierrez, Agnes (Joe) Newstrom, Nancy (Robert) Harryman, David (Vangie) Martinez, and Tina (Jim) Campbell.
Mary had many friends and even though in the last few years she was not as mobile, she enjoyed talking on the telephone sharing daily happenings. Mary’s family would also like to thank one special friend and neighbor, SuzAnne. SuzAnne was a watchful neighbor, frequently visiting to share a small glass of wine, and making countless meals for Mary and Raquel.
Mary is survived by her devoted husband of nearly 66 years, Raquel and their four children, Naomi (Steve) Leyba, Raquel (Donna) Romero, Richard Romero, and Steve Romero.
