Mary (“Mary Lou” to her family growing up) was, from the day she was born, a force to be reckoned with. She was the oldest of eight children. Her beloved father died when she was just 18, but taught her a love of ideas and practicality. Her mother raised the children and was a potent force of her own. Mary was a flight attendant, a school teacher, a guidance counselor, a real estate agent, a procurement officer for the United States Military, a school administrator, and Title IX Coordinator for the Utah State Office of Education. Mary loved to play bridge at the Millcreek Senior Center and to solve the New York Times Crossword Puzzle. Most proud among her accomplishments, however, were her two daughters, a professor and an attorney, and her five grandchildren.
Mary lived life her way, combining a pioneering spirit with sardonic wit, piercing insight with fierce love, and deep loyalty with restless curiosity. She will be truly missed by her family and friends.
Mary is survived by her daughters: Michele (Robbie Bear) Janette and Lisa (Stephen Hester) Petersen; her grandchildren: Zoe, Johan, Audrey, Rowan, and Max; her siblings: Lynne Brown, Anne Esplin, Faye Litster, and Jerry Anderson; and her many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held in her honor on Saturday, June 2, 2018 at 1:00 pm at the Memorial Holladay~Cottonwood Mortuary, 4670 South Highland Drive with a celebration of life to be held afterward at her daughter’s home. Online guestbook available at www.memorialutah.com.Service Information
