Mary Jane Furness

Mary Jane Furness passed away Sunday morning, April 22, a few days shy of her 74th birthday, from complications of ovarian cancer. She died peacefully at her sister’s home surrounded by loved ones. Mary was born April 26, 1944 to John E. and Della Spencer Furness is Salt Lake City, Utah. She lived in Salt Lake her entire life with the exception of when she served an LDS mission to Paris, France. She was an active member in the LDS Church holding many positions, her favorite being a visiting teacher coordinator as she loved serving others. Most recently she served as a service missionary at the LDS Church headquarters. Mary was a world traveler, her favorite place was Thailand. She also enjoyed reading, crocheting, walking, attending plays, the opera, and gymnastic meets and the U of U, and was an active member of DUP. Mary worked for the City of Salt Lake for 30 years. Mary earned a Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Utah and a teaching certificate from BYU. Mary is survived by her twin sister, Martha Jean Furness; her brother, Roger John (Sharron) Furness; her sister-in-law, Sherri (Charlie) Furness Holloman; along with many loving nieces and nephews. Mary is preceded in death by her parents, John E. and Della Spencer Furness; her brother, John Edmund (Ed) Furness, Jr.; and her brother-in-law, Earl Wayne Smith.  The family would like to thank the nurses, doctors, and CNAs at St. Marks Hospital and Everest Hospice Care for their dedicated and compassionate service. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 28th at 11:00 AM at the LDS Forest View Chapel located at 1111 East Charlton Avenue, Salt Lake City. There will be a viewing from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM preceding the funeral. There will also be a viewing Friday night from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM also at Forest View Chapel. Interment will be at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park located at 3401 Highland Drive in Salt Lake City. In lieu of flowers the family asks that a donation be made to a charity of your choice.
