Mary Crombie Gellert

October 16, 1934 — February 7, 2025

Holladay

Surrounded by her family, Mary C. Gellert, aged 90, died peacefully on February 7, 2025, after a prolonged illness. Born on October 16, 1934, to Peter and Dorothy Crombie, she grew up in Thompsonville, CT with her siblings, aunts, uncles, and cousins. She often delighted in recounting stories of her award winning 4-H Angus cow and her many academic achievements at Enfield High School.

Mary graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1956 and then from the Radcliffe Program in Business Administration in 1957. As part of the first generation of women to establish a career in finance, she successfully navigated the banking world with dedication and determination.

In 1969, Mary married Michael E. Gellert, forming a devoted partnership that spanned 52 years. Together, they built a home that reflected their shared love of education and classical music, representing their keen intellect and curiosity. Their home was known for its warmth and hospitality, often serving as a gathering place for family and friends. Mary’s culinary skills and signature recipes were central to these cherished moments and remain family favorites. Mary was also known for her creative painting, woodworking, and sewing projects; many of which were on display throughout the house.

Mary is predeceased by her beloved husband, Michael E. Gellert, and her brother Peter. A. “Gus” Crombie. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law John and Samantha (Topping) Gellert of Salt Lake City, UT and their three children: Michael, Alexandra, and Felix; her daughter Catherine “Kate” Gellert of New York City and her partner James Cottrell; and her sister and brother-in-law, Jane and Jacques Michel of Chartres, France. She also leaves behind many cherished nieces and nephews who will remember her fondly.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on March 1, 2025, at 10:00 am at St. Michael’s Church, 469 North St., Greenwich, CT 06830.
