Mary Gately Sprouse

February 1, 1931 — February 9, 2018

It is with great sadness that the family of Mary Gately Sprouse, 87, announces her passing.  Mary, a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend; passed into the loving arms of her Heavenly Father on Friday, February 9, 2018, in the comfort of her home.
Mary was born on February 1, 1931, in Marlboro, Massachusetts, to John Patrick Gately and Emily Frances Gately.  Mary had a very fun-filled childhood.  Growing up on the shores of the beautiful Lake Boone, Massachusetts, she spent her summers exploring and swimming and her winters sledding and skating with her 10 brothers and sisters.  She is remembered by family as a fantastic ice-skater.  She often talked about how much fun they all had.
She graduated from Klamath Union High School in Klamath Falls, Oregon.   Her father, an electrician, often traveled for work with his family.  While with her family in Salt Lake City, Mary met the love of her life, Donald Paul Sprouse.  They were married on May 31, 1952 in Murray, Utah.  They made their home in Salt Lake City, Utah.  Mary and Don were married for 56 wonderful years.  They raised three beautiful children.  Together they enjoyed camping, boating and the love of the outdoors.  When Mary and Don retired they enjoyed traveling.  Although, Mary was not in the best of health, in recent years, she was always plotting that “one last trip to Wendover.”
Mary was a proud and supportive mother who taught her children and grandchildren many valuable lessons by example. She always had a positive attitude and never spoke ill of others.  She was a very devoted caregiver to her husband, Don, for many years.  Even in her later years, while struggling with her own health issues, she kept a positive and hopeful outlook.  Often she would remind her family how important it is to live in the present and enjoy life.
Mary always loved getting together with family.  Her children and grandchildren were the apple of her eye.  Mary, along with her many brothers and sisters enjoyed any chance they had to get together and reminisce about the “good old days,” and sing a few Gately family favorites.
She is survived by her children:  Pamela, Michael (Lynn) and Todd (Michelle), her grandchildren Nicole, Jason (Sharon), Thomas (Sydney), Jonathan and Benjamin.  Her great-grandchildren Kenya, Hailey and Coby and her many loving brothers and sisters.
She is preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and her loving husband.
