Mary Ann Winnett Meiling

November 23, 1940 — July 1, 2021

Mary Ann Winnett Meiling, 80, died on July 1, 2021 in Murray, Utah. She was born on November 23, 1940 in Walla Walla, Washington to Walter Herman Winnett and Mona Elizabeth Kelly. She was married to her lifelong companion Phillip Dean Meiling on November 6, 1963 in the LDS Manti Temple.
Mary Ann grew up under challenging circumstances in Walla Walla as a child in the foster care system. However, this challenge changed the course of her life to from her birth family’s path to a new possibilities within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Her foster mother took her to church where she found faith, hope and a loving support system. Mary Ann graduated from Walla Walla high school and accepted a scholarship to BYU. She graduated from BYU’s nursing school in 1963. Later that year she met and married a handsome boy from Springville who had just returned from serving the Navy. She worked as a mother and baby nurse at both LDS and Cottonwood hospitals and later as a quality assurance nurse.
Mary Ann and Dean welcomed a son, Mark, a year after they married and adopted a beautiful daughter, Andrea, five years after that. Mary Ann was conscientious in making happy memories for her family planning camping trips, birthday bashes, road trips, holidays and game nights. Grandma sleepovers were epic events with piles of cookie dough, sprinkles, play dough, costumes, glitter, movies and crafts. Her nine grandkids knew they were loved. She counted Dean’s siblings, mother, nieces and nephews as her own. She rarely missed a parade on the 4th or 24th of July surrounded by a big crowd of family members.
Although her immediate family was small, she embraced all friends as family and all strangers as friends. Mary Ann and Dean had lifelong friend groups they had started from early years at nursing school, Police Academy, Square Dancing, and the Holladay Lion’s Club. For more than 50 years, they met with friends for game nights and First Friday lunch club where Mary Ann usually had her favorite, macaroni and cheese.
Mary Ann had many hobbies, including writing poetry, family history and home tours with the Utah Heritage Society. She served in many callings with the Midvale 4th Ward while she lived there for 55 years including president of the Primary, Young Women and Relief Society. Mary Ann had a strong conviction of the love of her Savior and the blessing that families are forever.
She is survived by her husband Phillip Dean Meiling, children Mark (Lisa) Meiling and Andrea Kennedy; 9 grandchildren and 6 great-grand children.
