Marvin Eugene Smith, Jr.

Marvin Smith left this earthly life on Friday, April 1, 2016 at his home in Cottonwood Heights, Utah surrounded by his family.   He had valiantly fought a long courageous battle with ill health.
Marvin was born January 20, 1945 in Paris Island, South Carolina, to Marvin Eugene Smith, Sr. and Dorothy Linda Washburn Smith.   Marv was blessed with two sisters and one brother.
Marvin served in the Buenos Aires, Argentina Mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  While on his mission, Marvin started the first Scout trip in the area and was involved in the scouting program from that point forward.  Scouting was definitely a passion of his.
Marvin attended both the University of Utah and BYU where he met the love of his life, Kathleen.
On May 12, 1967 Marvin and Kathleen Rae Cecil were married in the Salt Lake Temple of the LDS church.  They were blessed with seven children whom Marv loved dearly.
Marvin was a Vietnam Veteran serving on the USS Kitty Hawk aircraft carrier.
Marvin was an avid outdoorsman who was always planning the next camping, fishing, shooting, dirt biking and snowmobiling trip with his family.  He enjoyed building and flying model airplanes as well as RC boats and cars. He was known for his sarcastic demeanor and sense of humor.
Marvin is survived by his amazing wife, Kathleen.  His seven children: Victoria (Arthur) Babbel, Lisa (Costas) Vlamakis, Marvin Eugene Smith, III (Rita), Tamara (David) Iverson, Amy (Kelly) McMullen, Lori (Jason) Gowan and Michael (Michelle) Smith.  His Stepmother, Cordelia Smith and his sister, Athena Smith.   He is also survived by his deeply loved 30 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
Marvin is preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Smith; Father, Marvin Eugene Smith, Sr.; Sister, Linda Goforth and Brother, Robert Smith.
A viewing will be held on Friday, April 8 from 6 – 8 PM at the Greenfield Chapel, 6634 South Greenfield Way (1800 East) Cottonwood Heights, UT 84121.  Services will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, April 9, at the Greenfield Chapel as well with a viewing held prior from 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM.  Interment will be at Memorial Mountain View Cemetery, 3115 East 7800 South Cottonwood Heights, UT 84121.  In honor of Marvin, we ask that any men who have a scout uniform wear it to the services.
