Martin Jay Cortsen
On May 16, 2022, Martin Jay Cortsen left this world and all his loved ones here to be embraced by so many gone before including his parents, three siblings and many aunts and uncles. Marty was born July 23, 1950, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was the first of eight children born to Norman and Betty Cortsen.
Marty was always kind and intelligent but struggled tremendously with communication due to a brain injury at birth. This left him misunderstood and too often disregarded. Though he struggled socially, he shined in other ways. With the help of his aunt LaRita, he studied finances and investing and so enjoyed the subject he became proficient at explaining how the stock market works. Marty also enjoyed gardening, bowling and square dancing. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. At times he participated in the choir in the Cottonwood Third Ward and later was a member of the Cottonwood Heights 8th Branch.
Work was an important part of Marty’s life. He was quietly dedicated to his work throughout his adult life most recently doing office janitorial work for Sandy City. He had friendships and people who cared about him in his work environment.
Marty glided solo into senior life in the company of his parents. He was his mother’s chauffer as her body gave out and afterwards, he and dad shared many contented years like aging bachelors together. When his dad died, Marty’s whole world crumbled just as his injured brain was also rapidly deteriorating. So, he moved from his parent’s home to senior care and soon after to memory care. The group social setting and attentive care givers gave Marty some pleasure late in life. For this we express sincere thanks to the loving, devoted staff of Wentworth at Coventry (now Escalante at Coventry) and to Inspiration Hospice. More importantly, Marty’s comfort late in life was primarily due to dedicated care and support from his sister Katrina and her tireless husband Dennis Webber. Katrina preceded Marty in death by about one month. We trust that after being so briefly apart their reunion is a joyous one with both now whole and healthy.
Survived by siblings; Dan (Leslie) Cortsen, Becky (Ted) Wood, (Dennis Webber), Harriet (Con) Natter and Margaret Cortsen. Nieces and nephews; Heather Wood, Travis (Alea) Wood, Jordan Wood, Jana Wood,
Jenifer Johnson, Jen (Anya) Davis, Nathan (Falisha) Davis, Carson Natter, Paige Natter, Bruce Webber, Jared (Julianne) Webber, Benjamin (Erin) Webber, Adam (Cora) Webber, Timothy (McKenzie) Webber, Elizabeth (William) Murillo, Ana (Jason) Sargent, Elias Webber, Joshua Webber, his close cousins Rick Barrett and Elain (John) Burke and numerous other cousins and second cousins.
The funeral will be held Tuesday May 24, 2022, at 2:00pm with a viewing from 1:00 to 1:45pm at Lake Hills Memorial Mortuary, 10055 S. State Street, Sandy Utah. A viewing at the same location will be on Monday evening May 23, 2022, from 7:00 to 8:00pm.
