Martha Lindgren

October 2, 1925 — January 5, 2019

God called Martha Elisabeth Doelling Lindgren home on January 5, 2019.
At her request, a going home celebration of her life service will be held at the Mountain View Memorial Estates Funeral Home, 3115 East 7800 South, Salt Lake City, UT 84121 on Wednesday, January 9 at 11:00 a.m. The family will greet guests one hour prior to the service. Interment next to her beloved Ross will follow immediately after. If so desired, in lieu of flowers, she requested that any remembrances of her be given to the charity of the donor’s choice.
Daughter, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother and dear friend, Martha was born in Dresden, Germany on 2 October 1925 to Otto Johannes Doelling and his wife Emma Camilla Hartmann Doelling. Martha and her parents immigrated to America when she was very young, arriving in New York from Bremen, Germany on 18 Dec 1927 on the ship Columbus. She lived in and attended schools in Queens, New York until the family moved to Salt Lake City in 1943.
In 1943, at a Valentine’s Party with a girlfriend, she met the love of her life, Ross William Lindgren, with whom she will gladly spend eternity. They were married 6 August 1945 in Salt Lake City. He preceded her in death in 2001, to prepare the way for them both.
In the years since they met, her life was filled with family, friends, and service. Martha had great faith and a strong testimony of Jesus Christ and His gospel. She provided years of dedicated service to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Her church callings included MIA leader, Primary Teacher, Sunday School teacher, and Relief Society Teacher. But her favorite calling was in Family History, serving as a ward Family History Consultant for more than 50 years. In that effort she helped hundreds of individuals trace their family trees and found many thousands of her own family members. Always wanting to help others, the final few years of her life were the most discouraging for her, because her diminished eyesight limited her genealogy efforts.
The joys of her life included square dancing with her husband, clogging and performing with her dear friends, the “Clogging Grandmothers,” spending special occasions with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, and of course her commitment to family history research and temple work. She often spoke of her family being the source of her most joy.
Martha is survived by her brother, Dr. Hellmut H. Doelling (Gerda), and sister, Annemarie Davis (Blaine), children Martin (Janet), Rickard (Reba), Johannes (Sharron), Dorothy Tomlinson (Alan), Thomas (Marci), Jennifer Rankin (Steve), Priscilla Hanlon (Jim), Emily Anderson (John), and Lucy Yorgason (David), 47 grandchildren, 97 great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Hans & Camilla Doelling, husband Ross, and daughter, Penelope.
In her own words: “I am grateful to Heavenly Father for all my experiences in this life. My name is Martha Elisabeth Doelling Lindgren.”
