Marshall Sawyer

June 13, 1927 — May 6, 2017

On May 6, our dear Marshall left us. He passed away peacefully at his home, in the presence of family and hospice staff.
Marshall was born on June 13, 1927, the third of nine children, to William W. and Helen G. Sawyer in Chelmsford, Massachusetts. In 1944, he joined the Navy and served in the Pacific. After the War, he tried his hand at various crafts, then returned to the Navy. In 1950, he married Virginia Shotton, a union that would last until Virginia’s death in 2011. The family frequently moved, until Marshall retired from military service in 1968. In 1974, they settled in Salt Lake City and founded the family business Sawyer Glass. Marshall kept working even after retirement, until his final illness.
Much liked and loved, Marshall will always be remembered as full of vitality, enterprise, and enthusiasm. He was uncomplaining, hardworking, ambitious, creative, cheerful, funny, and, above all, deeply devoted to his wife and family. He is survived by his sons Rex and Brett Sawyer, his daughter Jan Bryant, and their spouses; nine grandchildren, including Brittney Sawyer, whom he raised as a daughter; and more than a dozen great-grandchildren, including Marcel, whom he also helped raise.
A graveside service will be held at Memorial Holladay Cemetery, 4900 S Memory Lane, Holladay, on Friday, May 12, at one o’clock. Online condolences can be submitted at www.memorialutah.com.
