Marna Lois Bain

November 1, 1933 — January 8, 2017

Surrounded by her family, Lois passed quietly though the veil to the loving arms of her Heavenly Father, husband Dale and her son Donnie on January 8, 2017. She was born of pioneer stock in Salt Lake City on November 1, 1933, the youngest of 5 children of Florence Woodbury and William Riley Hunter.
She had  an idyllic childhood saturated with love on Murphy Lane in Salt  Lake. She met the love of her life, Dale Bain, through a common friend. Lois attended Granite High School, and Dale attended rival South High where he played baseball. They shared many happy times at the baseball park with Lois faithfully cheering from the stands as he played. Their love affair culminated in marriage on November 27,1954, which was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on Aug 31, 1978. They were blessed with five children, Rob, Janet (Hal) Reiser, Donnie, Mark, and Kari. Dale and her son Donnie preceded her in death.
With her energetic entrepreneur husband Dale, they operated pharmacies in Sugarhouse, Sandy, Kearns and Coalville where she sold everything from cosmetics to candy and Christmas gifts to chocolate shakes while Dale worked behind the pharmacy counter. She deftly balanced merchandising with motherhood, giving her children an all-American childhood with hot dogs, baseball games, softball tournaments, street games, summer sparklers and open-windowed road trips to Arizona. She and Dale were avid boaters and spent summers at Utah Lake water skiing with family and friends.
She was a tenacious survivor of childhood polio who never complained or let it stop her from accomplishing anything. Working side by side with Dale, she taught her children by example to be industrious, resourceful, independent, optimistic and the pleasure and blessing of hard work. As “Grammy” she taught these same lessons to her beloved  grandchildren. A life-long animal lover, when her children were grown she found much joy with her canine companion Snickers.
She was truly a gentle soul, she accepted and loved everyone unconditionally. Her home was always open to anyone in need. As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, she served as a Primary teacher, as a missionary  in the Thai-Laotian Branch, and as a ward missionary. She and Dale loved singing in the ward choir and serving in the Jordan River Temple. To the end she kept her wry sense of humor, her pleasant demeanor and optimistic spirit.
When her health declined, her youngest daughter Kari tirelessly cared for “Lo”  for more than a decade, selflessly sacrificing her own comfort for her mother. Later, her youngest son Mark took a laboring oar with Kari to care for Lois so she could remain in her home until the very end.
She is survived by her children, Rob, Janet, Mark and Kari, her nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
